We will stay here now, yes? Because the ship is broken and we cannot go home.

[And chances are low that they will manage to get off planet, but Muscovy doesn't really see a point in that - the planet is warm and while, like every other place, it has its dangers, it seems like a fertile place that one should be able to make a good living on.]

So everyone should get married and have children, yes? Because unless you're immortal you will need them to take care of you when you get old, or ill. And it will be less scary to live here when there are children around, because it will feel more like a place that is home to everyone, yes? And it is a warm feeling to be with family and home, so it will make everyone happier.

If you know whom you want to marry but you don't know how to tell them, you can write them a letter and I will bring it to them!

And if you don't know whom to marry yet, you can tell me and I will tell you who else is trying to find someone to marry and then you can look at each other and talk about it. And then you can have children and be happy, yes?

[He's bouncing on his heels as he types his message into the comm.]

Newt needs a place with people to stay with for a few days, but she isn't allowed to know that she needs it. Can she stay with us and we tell her adult that she should help me with expanding Sketto and Pityo's house and her that she can help me with that but also that she should train with knives again and that Firo is a good teacher?

[He'd love to have a friend around all the time for a few days, even if it will be limited because she belongs to someone else it should be a lot of fun. And it would be a shame if what he taught Newt about daggers got all forgotten because nothing new got added to it. He likes to be the strongest to make sure that he can keep his friends with him because they need him, but he also likes his friends to be able to defend himself and be strong so they can survive.]

[Rey is tired. Too tired to be showing her face to the network after spending so much of her mental energies fighting the fire from burning down her home, as well as other endeavors against the rabid, terrified creatures fleeing the jungle. You know the drill.

[In any case, it caused a very real problem for her: She wasn't able to do her rounds of headcounting this time, as she had so been committed to. It's a bit of a problem, especially since she hasn't had the chance to do her search at the base camp since all the excitement happened.

[That said:]

did we even have any new people show up this jump?

you guys at the base camp better not be dead.

This is Mystique. These days you probably know me from the inconsistently gluey consistency of my campfire cooking. [Or from the fact she's still missing a foot, but she spares the network her self-pity. Suffice to say, though, she's a far cry from the reptilian ninja she once advertised herself as.]

I know we have pressing concerns. The animal attacks, disappearances, the stockade, corpses in day-glo crypts and other weird discoveries. Passing out after the Jumps. This isn't trying to take away attention from that, but I'm gonna assume it's connected somehow.

Our new powers. Some of you know what I'm talking about.

And by new, I mean since the crash. If you're an elf, this isn't elf magic. If you're a wizard, this isn't what you're used to doing with your wand. If you're a mutant, this isn't your mutation. Me, I've been able to make stuff out of thin air. It never lasts, but for a little, while it's real. Anything from bread to bullets.
[Or an accidental tractor tire! Sorry, Bucky.] I've been getting better at it with every passing month.

Before we arrived here, while we were still aboard the tranquility, a lot of us started to display similar new abilities[OOC link]. These turned out to be connected to the murderous and eventually pro-van rijn entity that was 'haunting' the ship, but learning control seemed to relate to the way that we ultimately overpowered it too.

Do you have new powers? New theories?

We keep having animal attacks. Even with regular perimeter patrols, that's cause for concern. With people still living in tents, we're too exposed. I know people have been making efforts to construct other dwellings, but those piecemeal efforts can only take us so far.

One thing we have an overabundance of is trees. If we get everyone working together, we can build a simple stockade and increase the security of the camp. It's not complicated engineering, but we need bodies to get it up in a timely manner, especially with the jungle increasingly coming up with new threats.

Answer any of the following privately to receive a more difficult puzzle in reply.

1. What is the name of the land of fire with the burning mountain in it?

2. There is a four-digit number, with digits abcd (d in the ones position, c in the tens, and so on), that fulfills the following conditions. What is the number?
    a = b/3
    b = b
    c = a+b
    d = 3b

3. You are running in a race. Just before the finish line, you pass the person in second place. What place did you finish in?

Rules:

1. Search with your mind, not your feet. This is for entertainment purposes only. Don't go looking for a burning mountain.
2. Send answers privately. Don't spoil it for anyone else.
3. Unless someone donates prizes, the only prize is more puzzles.

[When Muscovy appears, he looks a bit scratched up but also thrilled, glowing with the joy of a successful hunt. ...He also is confused, and a bit upset, (even though he is still smiling brightly) and that is why he is contacting the network.]

I found a little frog.

[He holds up his hands, which are forming a globe around... something. It's obviously invisible due to it being caught between his hands, but there are odd dark brown smears on his hand. They look almost like... chocolate.]

It is really strange and it didn't die when I hit it, but it is melting now and I can't make it stop that. Does anyone know how to make brown frogs stop melting? It is very silly to just melt after being hit couldn't kill you.

[He'll spread his fingers a bit so that one can, with a bit of squinting and watching closely, see a dark brown frog between his hands. ...Well, it looks like a chocolate frog that has been held in one's palms for a bit too long and melted a bit, and his fingers are even more chocolate stained on the inside. It also seems to have a pretty cramped situation between the boy's small fingers, because it definitely fills all the space in there.]

Umm... Do you think...

Are last names -- important?

I was, was thinking maybe... I dunno... My real mom had a last name, but I never used it... Lots of people got last names, though.

Maybe I could have one, too...?

[Not that he has one in mind. Only -- he does, but he's not sure if it's allowed. Is it? He wishes he knew.]

[There's a distant rumbling in the jungle, like an imminent thunderstorm on the horizon. But it's not a storm, that much can be seen when the mirrors activate sometime around noon, if not a little before.

[Surprise! It's Rey's face. She's in a tree, trying to hold the mirror as steadily as she can while the ground continues to violently shake. As mere seconds pass, one can tell that it isn't an earthquake, either.]

"Head's up. If you're in the jungle, you may want to take higher ground just to be safe."

[She shifts the mirror towards the ground below, from where she's standing in a tree. There is a whole herd of hooved animals roughly five to five and a half feet tall, while smaller ones are struggling to keep up behind them.

[As they blur by, some may notice the spears jabbed into the bodies of many of the creatures. Rey certainly has.]

"Don't know if they're headed directly towards the camp, but they'll probably come pretty close.

"...Be careful. There's a fucking ton of them."

18 October 2015 @ 06:19 pm
[Oh, but this will be short and sweet. Still, she wishes the new mirror network functioned a little differently right about now. What she wouldn't give to be able to hide the slight tremble in her voice, or eyes that are just a little shinier than they should be.]

Has anyone seen Fitz?

[You may know the drill: the low, calm, somewhat English-accented voice of a young man.]

This is Ryuuzaki, speaking for Communications.

From the viewpoint of network traffic, there are still no signs of any new arrivals this jump. The department will let you know if anyone turns up.

Those of you who have been monitoring the length of jumps: do you know how long this one lasted? Is it possible to tell whether or not we've moved at all?

Did anyone find new items in their lockers?

We can't check on the drive itself, but we can determine whether or not there's anything further to discuss.

[Talk of past jump drive malfunctions leads to concern about potential current ones... other than the usual. Or does the lack of new arrivals mean it's now functioning as it's supposed to?]

[He's been keeping to himself this entire time, working his way around the ship and learning where the lifts go and what times of day make it easiest to travel without running into anyone. Ailanne's intention had been to avoid everyone, find a way out of this place, and continue on his merry way.

Obviously, that hasn't happened yet.

Then comes the multitude of problems: he's stuck there. With no way home. No idea what's going on. And not a damned clue how to work any of the technology he's continuously faced with. (He'd stared down a microwave the other night and come no closer to discovering its purpose. He'd assumed it was an extra storage place and left the remains of his cold dinner there.)

So he tries to work his communicator again -- he'd gotten it to work once! Surely he can do it again. He's not a complete fool. He's actually very intelligent, thank you. Just... in other areas.
]

Hello?

[It's not on yet. He's staring at a blank screen. More button mashing is required. There is no method to that madness -- he just hits everything that pops up on the screen. First, he manages some text:]

8y3typ7PQ7TR FY

[Okay. Cool. Cool. He's got this. That was text. He's not sure what he just did, but he's managed to post one of his button mashing attempts.

Now how does he project his image? The button mashing saga continues. Anyone watching this train wreck will see flashes of his face, eyes narrowed in intense concentration. But the video continues to cut in and out.
]

Why won't-- --Fate's damned-- --work!

[And that's all you see and hear before the feed finally cuts on long enough to show the communicator's trip sailing through the air. The feed dies again as it smashes into a hallway wall.

Moral of the story: Ailanne still has no idea how to work the comm. But he's almost got it. So he might be able to reply.

[It takes a lot of days for Takeshi to feel brave enough to put something on the network. He's almost done it a few times before, but he was scared — scared and sad and not sure what to do, what to expect of the future. His mom is hurt so bad in the heart (and for really real, she hurt herself on the hip, and he needs to make sure she doesn't strain herself. But it's scary. It's scary when her mom reminds him of how his old mom had first started: sad, disconnected, sleeping lots and just doing whatever people needed her to do.

It's so, so scary. But Dad's gone, and they need to try to survive, because that's what Netherlands would have wanted from them. To keep living and trying to be happy. When Takeshi feels like crying, he reads the Miffy book in his room and goes to another place for a little bit. He imagines what Heder and Ned would look like as rabbit people, sometimes, and it makes him feel better a little.

Now's a good time, though. He gives the camera a small, nervous smile and then takes a deep breath.]

My Da — Um, Mr... Mr. Netherlands, he... went home. [He looks down, fidgeting with something off-screen.] I know he woulda' wanted us to keep taking care of things, and when he's gone it's harder to make sure the garden's okay, so if... if people are good at agr-a-culter, you should come be a part of the — the team! We're a good team. We'd get a lot of points in a game. Even though we're all sad, because we loved Dad a lot... he's okay. He's just... not here. He's prob'ly got real important stuff to do at home, too. He's always real busy here, so I think he's busy there, too. He's probably making all kinds of faces where he is, 'cus nothing's getting done jus' right.

[He sniffs hard, but he keeps his eyes dry and clear.]

M'sorry I only got bad news.

[Quiet for a moment, his expression brightens a fraction, and he rubs his nose before he lifts up a small wooden dragon, carefully sculpted.]

This is Mattie. She's a dragon Dad made. She was bad before, but then —

[He holds up a fair maiden sort, sculpted with a lovely dress.]

Miss Princess Reika trained her to do good. And now they fly together a lot...

[He drifts off, smile fading a lot.

I love you, Dad.]

It's good, to work together. It's nice to be friends. We're all a team. So — it's up to us to do good things, for people who leave, who worked really hard! And loved us so so much, so much they say they love you, even if they never use those words 'cus it makes them feel weird. So we should do real great things and keep working like they did.

[He smiles and nods. Keep smiling, he thinks.]

If you see my Mom — Heder — say hi to her, 'cus she's hurting, too.

.... That's all.

[Disconnected.]

14 May 2015 @ 11:28 am
[The feed shows a boy of maybe six or seven, sitting in the gardens with a sheet of paper lying before him - the list of things that he wants to address. He's wearing the ship's uniform and his long hair is braided in a complicated pattern and adorned with little red, white and blue pearls.]

If there is someone who always comes when we call them, and they don't come here, is there a way to make them come? Where I was before, you could do a task and get a reward, there should be something like that here as well, yes? Even though there are no regents, but we are still pulled to this ship, so it has to be similar.

[He tried to call the General because one of the other residents of the ship, Glacius, would have liked to meet him and he didn't come, and as much as he doesn't like the cold, not having General Winter at his disposal means a pretty major loss of safety and that would be a lot of loss of potential "fire"power to make up for. It makes things a lot scarier.]

And I have a few other things, too. [He holds up a hand, four fingers stretched out.]

Are there any people from East of Poland and Lithuania and west of Mongolia here? Or who feel like they belong there in one way or the other. [One finger is bent down, and he giggles when it is a bit complicated to keep the other three up - but it works out in the end.]

I need to talk to William Tsang, but I don't know what he looks like so I couldn't find him. [Asking might have gone a long way but the scary looking old woman that he saw around in the med bay when he stalked it made him continue stalking instead of taking heart and asking someone, and when you don't know whom you're looking for...] So you should tell me what he looks like, yes? [Another finger goes, and this one needs to be held down by the thumb so the remaining two can go up again.]

Does anyone have a set of balanced daggers for fighting that they don't need? I can offer customized knitted products for a trade, or maybe something else if that doesn't work.

[And then he stops abruptly, his eyes going wide before narrowing and tears appearing in the corners, and he raises both hands to hold his head. When he lowers them again a bit later, a trickle of blood has started to run out of his nose, but he isn't noticing it yet, looking left and right with a nervous glance (is there someone who did this?) before snuffling and fixing the smile back on his face and continuing, though his eyes are still a bit onfocused.]

We looked in the kitchens and there are good knives, but they aren't balanced right. [He suddenly remembers that he was showing the bullet points on his hand and raises his hand, only his little finger pointing up now.]

And I want to learn things. I can play the harp a bit, but I want to learn more about it so it gets nicer. So if you know how to play the harp, you should teach me. And I want to learn how to shoot a firearm because they work everywhere here, yes? And I want to get better with the bow and my daggers, too, so if you are very good at fighting with them you should teach it to me, too. Because children should learn things, yes? [So adults obviously have the duty to teach them. He peers down at his cheat sheet and then nods and lowers his hand, clasping it together with the other in his lap.

And just smiles at the camera for a little bit before reaching out to turn the feed off - at which point he stops abruptly because blood has dripped from his nose onto the back of his hand and he reaches up in shock to touch his lip and wipe at the blood with hands and sleeves.]

[Wash was already not in a good mood after the craziness before the jump. Then he woke up from the jump to find Zoe and Kaylee gone. So the usual goofy big brother figure is not available. Instead, you get grumpy!Wash.]

Okay guys. Seriously. Shuttles? Not your personal getaway craft. They're communal getaway craft. As in, if we ever find ourselves in a situation where we need to get the hell out of here, we need them.

And in case you're not clear on that point, those things take a hell of a lot of maintenance. On top of everything else, they get damaged every jump. Differently every time. We've tried a lot of things to secure them ahead of time, but so far no luck. If you have a brilliant idea for preventing it we haven't tried yet, I'm all ears.

Which brings us around to the other point I wanted to make here. Just like every department, we keep losing people.

[And there's more than a little pain in that particular statement. Actually no he's not taking the fact that his wife is gone and the best case scenario is she's gone back for him to die particularly well.]

And there could come a time when we need shuttle operational to get out of here. Which also means we're going to need more people who can train them. We need more people joining the department, but if you're already committed somewhere else, we can cross train you to fly in an emergency.

And if you don't have any experience, don't let that stop you. Mostly we just want people who are willing to learn. Gavvers had never even seen electricity before. If he can learn to help out, so can you.

[Please need lessons he could do with the distraction]

"Recently, you've all been told that there is a traitor.

"So you should probably know what it was I did."

[She pauses, searching for the words while she lets that sink in for a heavy moment. One might note that her tones are different; she doesn't sound like her usual robotic self when she speaks. Quite the opposite, actually. Rey sounds almost like-human. In her own way, you could say that this her one big "fuck you" to Smiley. You think she wouldn't tell everyone? Well, now she is. Full disclosure. So there.]

"I entered the dark corridors shortly after the DUPRR crew had docked the ship. Before long it became apparent that the things infesting the hallways weren't approaching me with any hostility. Because they weren't attacking, I was able to reach the secondary shuttle bay more or less without much incident. During that trek I made an effort to avoid others, not knowing the extent of the compulsion and whether it would also drive me to harm anyone who stood in the way." [Well, it's mostly the truth she speaks. You're welcome, William.]

"All that remained was the DUPRR pilot, Neson. Needing his trust, I tricked him into coming with me by pretending to be a person who was trustworthy. It's something I've become rather good at, actually -- pretending to be someone else, much like how I am right now. Despite the fact that something wanted me to kill this man, I decided to will against it.

"It didn't work as intended.

"Instead, I took him to the White Room. I opened the door. And I led him through.

"He's likely still in there right now, where it's kept him."

[She stops, still dizzied from the jump. The more she speaks, the more hoarse her voice gets. She hasn't been using it that much lately, and it's clear from her shadowed eyes and worn features that she's been neglecting more than just sharing this information.]

"Apparently, doing this has-- 'stopped the clock', whatever that means.

"For what it's worth, I'm sorry."

( people acquainted with milagros would be forgiven for being concerned that her being seen making a video for the network is a harbinger of terrible things, because she doesn't exactly strike anybody as 'a social type'. in fairness, this is not a social message, but although she is the bearer of some bad news, it's largely housekeeping and her brisk attitude reflects that. the backdrop to her message is a desk in an office that will look familiar but not quite right to her patients-- all the right small touches, subtly wrong locations.

her serene air remains as it ever does, suggesting vaguely that she's waiting for something to impress her, and finds the universe slightly wanting. )

A few brief announcements on behalf of Medical and Xenogen.

To the first - I have recently left my position in the Medical department and taken one in Xenobiology and Genetics. This will affect none of my current patients, who I will continue to work with from my new space, but means that I will no longer be taking on medical cases without a referral through our CMO, William Tsang, who is welcome to bring patients to my attention at his discretion. Any of my current patients who wish to have a referral back to someone remaining in the med bay full time are free to speak with me about this at their leisure.

Further, to Xenogen, Professor Snape is no longer with us as of this past jump. If the professor was working with you, please speak with us at Xenogen to see that your case is referred to the next most appropriate member of our current team. If you have concerns about your referral, Professor Xavier is available to discuss them with you.

During the previous jump cycle, Professor Snape relinquished his authority as CXO back to Professor Xavier, who retains that role going forward and with whom you should also speak if you are interested in joining the department. Like all departments, we are experiencing a dearth of intelligent, inquisitive minds; we are currently looking for those of a scientific background to round out our team, but will consider other relevant expertise.

( and she's not allowed to veto people, apparently. god, charles, you'll let just anyone in. (yeah, he let her haughty ass in.) )

Hello. Sirius & I had a go at mapping the ship, & it went a bit wrong.

Not wrong like the boggart went wrong. Don't worry. Everything is fine, except our map, although to be safe everyone should avoid the lounge on 005 near the 070s rooms for a day or two while we sort it. It's possible that the spellwork is off. But as we're actually very good at this (I promise) the more likely explanation is that something else is off.

If things had gone according to plan, it would have been a map that was anchored to the ship & able to move with the corridors & so on. It's hard to explain what happened, but we have it recorded.

ATTACHED )

It still looks like that. We've been watching it for a while & nothing has changed. If anyone has any ideas, we would love to hear them.

Hello, fellow... passengers.

I have what should hopefully be a simple request. I am a new arrival looking for somewhere comfortable to reside. Is there any place on this ship that is colder--much colder--than the common rooms provided? Or, similarly, is there any way to lower the temperature of said rooms?

Any help in this regard would be appreciated.
