We will stay here now, yes? Because the ship is broken and we cannot go home.

[And chances are low that they will manage to get off planet, but Muscovy doesn't really see a point in that - the planet is warm and while, like every other place, it has its dangers, it seems like a fertile place that one should be able to make a good living on.]

So everyone should get married and have children, yes? Because unless you're immortal you will need them to take care of you when you get old, or ill. And it will be less scary to live here when there are children around, because it will feel more like a place that is home to everyone, yes? And it is a warm feeling to be with family and home, so it will make everyone happier.

If you know whom you want to marry but you don't know how to tell them, you can write them a letter and I will bring it to them!

And if you don't know whom to marry yet, you can tell me and I will tell you who else is trying to find someone to marry and then you can look at each other and talk about it. And then you can have children and be happy, yes?

[ The video feed opens on a woman who, to put it charitably, looks rough. Sitting cross-legged beneath a chaotic weave of ficus roots, she is ensconced in a filthy, shapeless back robe, and her face - deathly pale where it is not freckled or peeling - is wreathed in an ill-kempt tangle of red hair. In her lap sits a bleached skull of some native fauna, clearly if not catastrophically altered by the mutations that have been plaguing the wildlife. ]

Salutations and due deference to the residents of the camp and its surroundings. It is my honor and obligation to be Iezabel Sadonna, and in full faith I address you with a matter of some interest and urgency.

These past days have illuminated in bright dyes and gleaming gilt the danger we face as a community in dispersion. Walls protect those who dwell in the as-it-were capital of our modest settlement, but many of us live outside the crowded ramshackle of camp.

For those who do not have the benefit of those defenses, and who wish to preserve their sovereign right to privacy, I can offer a measure of security.

[ She raises the skull, letting it rest on the plane of her palms, its hollow eyes gazing into the camera.]

As a trained nekrodidact and mnemonist, I can fashion a useful praxis. With such a praxis in place, you may rest easy knowing the comings and goings within your vicinity. Impressions will be recorded, with or without your presence, discouraging ambush or subterfuge.

[ She sets the skull back down rather suddenly, catching a short burst of coughs in one hand before speaking again, this time with a slight croak in her voice. ]

To all interested parties, I propose a barter. I am in need of live specimens, and clean textiles.
[the video starts out zoomed in on a figure below, attached to a rope hanging from somewhere above. the figure moves around an area that is, in a word, trashed. there are slabs of stone, some broken but more whole, pieces of lumber that are either shattered or just broken in half, metal beams, and various other odds and ends strewn about. as the as-of-yet anonymous figure moves about, the video slowly zooms out to show the entire area they’ve found.

the area is huge. there are building materials everywhere.

inside what is clearly a part of the ship are sacks of what could be cement, rolls of something that almost looks like insulation, and solar panels. there are various other materials, but these stick out as being the most noteworthy. Rey, the videographer, silent until this moment, speaks up as she pans across the gaping, ruined hull.]

[AJ is currently hopping from one pile of stones to a larger crate, her supplies and bow slung across her back as Rey captures the entire scene. She startles a small den of flying geckos who, braying alarm, burst up and out of the hold of the ship. Once she regains her balance, AJ puts her hands to her mouth to shout.]

There's another fifty stacks piled up under here! You want to build a city or what?

[the video cuts out, and a few hours later, a text post is added:]

it’s all there
everything you need to build a settlement
i was told this was a colonization ship, and i guess it wasn’t a lie

we grabbed some samples of things that weren’t obvious
some of it just looks like sand, or powder
some just plastic
i don’t know much about building so someone else should take a look at it
some of it can probably be used on the ship, too

[as much as it makes rey uncomfortable to add this next part, this is the second biggest scavenging find she’s ever made, and she needs manpower.]

we definitely need a team to pull it all out
sign ups start now

[ooc; hello, friends! this is the result of rey & aj’s climb-all-over-the-ship scavenging extravaganza. any questions about building materials to be found can be directed to the salvage request thread linked above. this location is open to free access for characters, as per the mods, and material extraction can begin immediately.]

[Wanda feels like everyone she's met here in her short tenure on this planet so far -- about four months -- has gone missing (maybe sent back home? who knows?) within days or weeks. It's getting kind of hard to not take it personally. Coupled with her recent experience in which she came back here after experiencing a very personal loss back home, it's putting her that much more on edge.]

Has anyone seen Steve Rogers recently? He wears a lot of red, white, and blue.

[There are also two or three other people she's noticed haven't been around the past couple of days, but she only asks about Steve. That's all she has the energy for. Plus, Steve would probably ask about her if she went missing like this; she should do it for him, too.

That's it, that's the text.]

We managed to dig some of the water purification equipment out of the ship. We should be able to get the river water all non-burny once we get it all working properly. Had to take it to pieces to actually haul it back out.

So that's where the rest of you come in. We need help getting this set up. Especially getting power running to the purifiers.
[He's bouncing on his heels as he types his message into the comm.]

Newt needs a place with people to stay with for a few days, but she isn't allowed to know that she needs it. Can she stay with us and we tell her adult that she should help me with expanding Sketto and Pityo's house and her that she can help me with that but also that she should train with knives again and that Firo is a good teacher?

[He'd love to have a friend around all the time for a few days, even if it will be limited because she belongs to someone else it should be a lot of fun. And it would be a shame if what he taught Newt about daggers got all forgotten because nothing new got added to it. He likes to be the strongest to make sure that he can keep his friends with him because they need him, but he also likes his friends to be able to defend himself and be strong so they can survive.]

I'm just about set for going in after the water purification equipment. Only one thing left to settle really.

Can someone keep an eye on Newt for me? She's pretty independent... actually, it'll probably be easier if you don't let her know that you're doing it. But if I'm going to be in the ship for a couple days, I'd like to know someone's watching her in case we get more creatures swarming or the camp catches fire or something like that. She's a clever kid, but she's still a kid.

( to cut a long story short, there were two new arrivals, this month. mila had been elusive by design, seeking out the half-finished molded tree that she'd been working on before her absence - the overlay of a few months memories is nothing compared to the hell of a dozen lifetimes blurring together when they first arrived - and clinging to it as the last familiar thing. protecting it from the fire. praising it for how it had grown the way she wanted it to.

she does, eventually, have to acknowledge something beyond her tree. so.

very blandly, and in a voice that will be familiar to some who were present for the announcements she periodically made on behalf of medical or xenogen-- )

I leave you people alone for ten minutes and you set the fucking jungle on fire.

( what's that about. )
what's the status of this ship? besides crashed
and what class is it? which system did it come from? i've never seen anything like it and i've flown almost everything there is
who was its pilot? its crew? does it have a hyperdrive generator? something this big should
you might know it as the jump drive. that's a term i've heard thrown around but nobody seems to really be able to explain it
i need to know every detail

there's obviously extensive damage all over but the worst debris can probably be stripped away
with time and the right tools
which i need
all of them, all of the tools
i don't care if it's a wrench or a hydrospanner, i need it
just put them in a pile somewhere and i'll sort through the mess
if there's a droid handy, i'll need that too
and lots of rope

i'm going to get this thing flying again

Lot of folk here don't seem to know that most witchin' ain't about usin' magic. It's just lookin' after folk. Lot of what I do's just mixin' up medicine and makin' sure injuries are kept right. Ain't any reason I can't treat you lot to do that. So I'm offerin'.

If ye want to learn about treatin' burns and animal bites and such, ye can come talk to me in the gardens. Look for the black pointy hat.

[Because some parts of witching are what you'd expect.]

Before you go flinging shit all over me, I know there's worse to worry about right now, but if any of you knows how to sew and has the cloth to spare I'll find some way to pay you back.

These blue rugs make shitty ponchos and unlike some of you lucky bastards I never got more than one set of space pajamas. I'll take spares, too, if that's all there is to go around.

[AJ's voice is utterly defeated right now, but then she's been wearing one of those bolts of blue alien fabric that had been collected from a month or two ago, the badly folded likes of which have been covering the shredded back-side of her crew-issue jumpsuit for the last two days. She's been feeling about as comfortable as a cat in a festive sweater.]

[Rey is tired. Too tired to be showing her face to the network after spending so much of her mental energies fighting the fire from burning down her home, as well as other endeavors against the rabid, terrified creatures fleeing the jungle. You know the drill.

[In any case, it caused a very real problem for her: She wasn't able to do her rounds of headcounting this time, as she had so been committed to. It's a bit of a problem, especially since she hasn't had the chance to do her search at the base camp since all the excitement happened.

[That said:]

did we even have any new people show up this jump?

you guys at the base camp better not be dead.

Attention, citizens.

The suspected criminal has been captured and detained, with the assistance of Citizen Hawke, and Citizen Rogers. She is being held under a charge of larceny.

I am keeping armed guard over the suspect, but am presently refraining from taking any punitive action. My own capabilities suggest the guilt of the suspect, however - understanding there is no clearly established legitimate political authority - I turn to the camp-citizenry for the question of how best to practice justice.

We therefore require corroboration from others capable of the necessary interrogation techniques, to discern the truth of the matter. With no material evidence, the contents of the suspect's mind - her thoughts and memories - are the only conclusive source of proof. Luckily, I believe we have several citizens capable of such an inquiry.

There is also the larger question of standards of conduct, rule of law and expectations of propriety which are not well established. This is as good a time as any to seek consensus on the matter.

May Justice and its flower, Peace, be well served.

Okay, so there are definitely aliens here. (Or I guess we're the aliens, technically.) It'd be good to try to compile what we know so far in one place, so here are a couple questions:
1. What are we calling them? I've heard crickets, I've heard grasshoppers, and a bunch of other stuff that seems even less polite. Can we agreee on one? Any other ideas?

2. I haven't run into any that seem chatty yet but I hear they talk in colors???

3. Do we have any idea how the people they took were chosen/singled out? Did you/they all go to a specific place or distance or do something to draw their attention? Anything in common? Looking for patterns never really worked on the ship but we could try.
30 January 2016 @ 03:13 pm
So this is probably a really stupid question
What do dogs eat?
I mean
I know what they eat normally
it's just
our predicament
& limited resources.

Mammalia aren't exactly my area of expertise.

PS- I got a light to turn on.
[ aka phase one of the grid: complete. ]
28 January 2016 @ 08:10 am
right, so I've come up with a few questions since my entire stint as a missing person.

Who can tell me a few more facts about our diseased animal friends?
26 January 2016 @ 01:09 pm
[Wanda has been wondering the answer to this question for a couple of weeks, so she's finally going to present it to the network via text: ]

For those of you who have had people from your own home worlds show up here as well, can I ask this sort of simple question: Do you often find that one of you remembers more about events from home than the other does?

I just ... am wondering if that is something normal here.
24 January 2016 @ 10:18 am
[After a lot of thought she's decided against video, because she still doesn't like talking and wants to get her point across without messing it up]

My name is Chell. I'm one of the few people left that worked in Agriculture on the ship.

Looking for people to help in the new gardens. You don't need to know anything about farming or growing food, just have to be willing to listen to instructions and help out.

If you do have experience, that would be great.

If you have any questions leave them here or come looking for the woman in the orange jumpsuit.

Thank you

Attention, citizens.

I have located a perpetrator of criminal larceny.

Her appearance: seemingly human, not quite two meters in height, lean, ill-shaven; a fringe dweller, outside the settlement density perimeter, likely an arrival from a more recent jump. [ More recent than herself, she means. ]

When confronted she pretended compliance before affecting a transformation into a mammalian monster. Teeth, claws, pelt, accelerated healing. Increased sized and strength. She fled after I fired my sidearm, wounding her leg.

I have pursued her to a ridge some distance from the river. [ coordinates are provided ] I am having trouble keeping pace. If anyone with combat experience is nearby, backup would be beneficial.

We should take her alive, if possible. Justice must be served.

(( OOC Note: This post refers to an encounter with Flint Deckard, not the ongoing modplot about thefts in the camp. So much crime, so little time! ))
