ataraxion | Text; another poll

Hey everyone.

I'm sure some sort of demographics survey has been done in the past but I haven't seen one since I've been here and I'm curious. I've tried to keep it pretty basic. I know people are touchy about their privacy, and I know some aren't cool with being asked about special abilities/skills/powers/whatever, so obviously skip questions if you want to, no hard feelings. I'd rather just get name/age/planet than nothing at all, you know? Not like I'm going to hunt you down and force you to fill it out. But if you're willing to be more complete that'd be awesome and if there's something you think is important that I didn't include a field for, let me know.

Maybe there's a pattern here somewhere, maybe there's not, but at the very least it might be interesting or provide some useful data for department recruitment or something. Maybe you'll find some friends, whatever.

Then I shall have to consult Lucrezia about what manner of punishment is most befitting of such a grievous crime against the denizens of this ship, and the three of us may mete it out upon him together.

Does that sound acceptable? [ this is so much fun. ]

Definitely. [ Assuming this is an all in good fun sort of punishment and doesn't involve Lucrezia poisoning him or something. She hasn't connected the first name with Borgia yet, or she might inquire more closely before agreeing. ]

Good! Meanwhile, he is being a boor and attempting to confuse me about the nature of the flow of time upon this ship.

( what? lucrezia would never poison anyone for fun like that. if she ever hears such rumours spoken, she will defend her friend—nay, her sister. )

Actually, [ After Kate's taken a moment to catch up down the post and see what Sirius is saying ] I'm afraid he's telling the truth there. We really don't know how much time passes while we're in the pods during jumps. A previous passenger was able to stay out and reported that sometimes we were asleep for a month or even a year.

( that fact stills her, and her eyes grow wide with shock. )

But how would we be able to stay alive that long, whilst sleeping? It would be unnatural!

[ Kate's smile is sympathetic. It's an unnerving thing to learn, that's for sure. ] It would be because of the stasis fluid in the pods, and the nanites in our systems. They're already keeping us alive during the jumps, which is even more unnatural. I don't understand the details of the science involved, but it's definitely possible - even likely - that large amounts of time are passing instead of the minutes we think it is.

( unnerving is right; lizzie has to suppress a shiver. )

These -- these nanites -- someone should investigate them more closely. If so much time is passing, then what else might be occurring while we are asleep? How does this ship function without us to run it?

These are questions I might never have thought of before now.

I'm sure someone in the science department has by now, but I don't know if anything interesting was discovered. I'll have to ask.

They're good questions. I mean, I'm not sure we're necessary for the ship to function, it seems to mostly run on its own as far as I know. We fiddle with things here and there and maybe help with upkeep a bit in Engineering but I don't think anything we're doing is actually vital on a day to day basis. [ Kate shrugs. ] But I could be wrong about that. I haven't had much of anything to do with Engineering yet.

I understand precious little of this thing called science. I know not even how the light here functions--it is called electricity, is it not?

But I would know these answers. ( she goes silent for a moment, considering. ) Were you here several months ago when a woman named Charlotte attempted to destroy this ship? She mentioned to me that we are the "crew" of this vessel, and that medical had detailed files about each and every one of us. I have yet to know just what manner of information they contain.

But I yet wonder what she meant by all of that.
