( now that she's had some time to recover from the outbreak of "plague", elizabeth deems herself presentable enough to appear to the ship as a whole. she might have pinched her cheeks a little to inject some colour and done her hair up in ribbons to look her best; but she has done so for more reasons than simply to flatter her pride or vanity. her smile is sweet and gentle, though it does not reach her eyes. her gaze instead is quiet and thoughtful, because this is a tremendously bittersweet occasion for her. )

Greetings, Tranquility. Within the past several months, we have all suffered and lost many who are and will ever be dear to us. Far too much to be borne by anyone within the realm of reason. Yet we have, and I daresay grown together as a community as a result. That gladdens me a great deal.

Each day we have is precious. We know not when the next bout of unpleasantness may strike upon us, nor when any of us might vanish from this ship, returned to our homes. While things are peaceful, I would celebrate that fact. That we are here and alive, and in the company of those we have come to care for. Some of you are as dear to me as members of my own family.

( ok, the sappy part is done with. her eyes light up with good cheer now. )

Thus, I invite all of you to a feast held within the kitchens of the first floor, four days hence. It will do us good, I think to feast and be merry together.

I will need some aid in this endeavour, though, should any of you wish to lend a hand in acquiring foodstuffs and preparing the meal itself. I will both owe you a favour and be eternally grateful. Also, should any of you wish to have a specific dish at the table, please do share the recipe for it with me if you know it.

What say you?

Got two things to ask and one thing to offer. I'll try to make it short and sweet.

QUESTION 1: What destroyed or depopulated your version of Earth? Nukes, asteroids, zombies? If nothing did yet, what took the closest shot so far?

Same question if you're not from Earth - just swap out Earth for wherever you came from.

I'm not compiling a spreadsheet or anything. I guess it's just something I've wondered.

QUESTION 2: What are we even doing here? What's our destination? The purpose of the voyage? Who sent us, and why us? Maybe I missed something and by all means point me there if I did, but in less than a day, this ship sucks up more resources than the Ark could spare for a month.

I've been here for over a month now and I'm the first person I've seen ask anything like this so far. I want to think it's because we were up to our airholes in highly invasive nanotechnology. Or - like I said, maybe I missed the big 'who, what, where, and why' memo.

OFFER: I'm bored off my rocks, if you haven't picked up on that yet. I was a zero-G mech back on the Ark, and if that's not enough, I helped fix the thing that saved your asses pre-Jump. I can repair, rebuild, or build from scrap just about anything you can think of. So somebody give me a job before I start opening panels and improving whatever the hell's inside.

[ is she serious? she very well could be, so throw her a bone here, yeah? ]

Hey everyone.

I'm sure some sort of demographics survey has been done in the past but I haven't seen one since I've been here and I'm curious. I've tried to keep it pretty basic. I know people are touchy about their privacy, and I know some aren't cool with being asked about special abilities/skills/powers/whatever, so obviously skip questions if you want to, no hard feelings. I'd rather just get name/age/planet than nothing at all, you know? Not like I'm going to hunt you down and force you to fill it out. But if you're willing to be more complete that'd be awesome and if there's something you think is important that I didn't include a field for, let me know.

Maybe there's a pattern here somewhere, maybe there's not, but at the very least it might be interesting or provide some useful data for department recruitment or something. Maybe you'll find some friends, whatever.

UPDATE: On request from several of our fellow passengers, I'm adding a 'relationship status' field. You're all welcome. Feel free to edit/update your entries accordingly if you want to.

(ooc: feel free to treat this as threadjack city as far as I'm concerned. if you squint it's kind of almost like an ic cr meme?)

[Johanna flicks on the video with a glare. The room around her is dark; the screen lights her face from below. When she speaks, her voice is a little rough and hoarse, like she's been shouting a lot, very recently. (She has.)]

Hi, friends. [She bites out the word.] Just a little message for you all. You've all gotten really comfortable on this hunk of junk you're calling a ship--or what's passing as a ship-- [And she manages a little smirk at that--] --which, come on, it's crap. But I get it, it's not yours. You're all just prisoners here, it did some horrible things to you... yeah.

And that's where this comes in.

[She holds up her arm, where her tattoo is clearly stamped out, fresh and new.]

See this thing? This isn't a fashion accessory. This is bullshit. The last time someone shoved something in my arm and told me to smile and get on with my life, I didn't put up with it. I'm getting this thing out of myself, and if any of you have any sense--you'll do the same. You wonder how they get to you? It's things like this. But I'll bet you already knew that.

Well, fuck that. Fuck all of it. I'm not doing that again.

You want us to join up and help you run this ship? --Or resist this ship, or fight whatever you think is here? Here's my offer. First person that tells me how to get this thing out of my arm without dying, I'll join whatever they're running. And you want me on your side.

21 June 2014 @ 08:10 pm
You're not alone. People you care about are calling for your help, and you want to go help them. I'm going to ask you to be a little more patient before you run off into the dark. We know they're lost, we know there's something pursuing them, we know they need help. But we also know that the most recent post on the network, the one talking about warnings from the captain - a captain we don't have - wasn't made by one of us. That means this problem is bigger than you think; it's bigger than all of us, and it's important we get a clear image of what we're facing before we leave. Shepard's team has gone missing, and other comms have started going off the radar too--we'll start where they disappeared, and if we do this together, we might even succeed. The last thing we need is more of you lost out there because you chose to do this on your own.

Right now I need your help in a different, but just as important way. If you've received a message from someone, we need to hear them. That way we can establish a thorough list of who's missing, and try and piece together what they were all trying to say.

Tyke, as Head of Security, is going to coordinate the rescue. I imagine she'll speak to you shortly herself. Rest assured we'll need bodies on the ground for this one, and I know there's going to be no telling some of you to stay put, so forgive me if I - at least - save myself the effort of trying. The corridors are dangerous: bring weapons, ammunition, your communicator, but don't worry too much about rations--you won't need them.

[ He seems about to sign off, but he has to address that post, the grinding static and the screams underneath it, all of it so familiar to him by now. ]

"They're getting closer." I don't know about you, but that doesn't sound like a coincidence. Whatever we find out there, whatever is after our people, try not to kill it unless you have to. Don't get killed, but bear in mind the risk that we may be deceived into murdering people who would be our allies. I can't shake the feeling that we're being set up. Alright. Hang in there, everyone.

[Unanon. Not that anyone will necessarily know to think 'Holy shit.']

Hey, good ol' buddies of the TQ. I need a doctor. So I guess if you're in medical raise your hand or something. Thanks.

[ peeta's got the device propped up on something when he switches it on, and it stays steady when he steps away to take a seat on the edge of his bed. he's wearing the standard issue tranquility jumpsuit, sleeves rolled up against the heat in his room, and he leans forward onto his elbows as he begins to speak. his tone matches his posture; despite the arguably tense topic, he seems relaxed. ]

I know people are worried about what happened on the bridge. I agree that we should find out what went on inside, but others already have that covered — and I'm more interested in why none of the mutineers are dead. [ slightly harsh wording. nobody had expected them to get out of there, so there's no point in talking around it. ] I've only been here for a month, and people have a lot of warnings about the ship being dangerous, about how it's out to get us. Which makes me wonder why all of us aren't dead, either. Some of you have been here for months already, right?

[ it's a rhetorical question. he's heard months, over a year. he still pauses before continuing, if only because he's making a slight switch in gears. ] Where I come from, the people in charge have a system. They created it to make people frightened and to keep them from having hope. They could probably just kill everyone if they wanted to, but they still need us — they need us to work, keep their Capitol running.

I think the ship's the same. I don't think it wants to kill us. I think it needs us for something, and that the events I've heard about — the stations it brings you to, the trials it engineers, they're trying to push us to do something. But this is where the comparisons to the Capitol stop. If all it wanted was inaction, it would've killed everyone on the bridge, but it didn't. I think it wants something else, and it needs us to do it.

[ another pause, and this time he offers a slight smile when he continues. maybe a bit out of place, but it becomes clear enough that he's taking amusement at his own expense. ] But I'm new here, so I couldn't tell you what. Normally I'd say it wants us to fight, but I've been told that doesn't accomplish much. I guess that's why I'm asking you — if there's anything that seemed like a hint, or a command, or a reward.

Everyone's caught up on solving the mysteries behind these things. I know this is probably just because I'm bad at riddles, but I'm more interested in the results. How they make us behave and what we're being taught to expect. I have no idea if we want to listen, but I think it'd be a good idea to try to figure out what it's asking us to do.

Bridge is ours. No resistance encountered.

Doors locked. Not opening from the inside. Attempting manual release. Request assistance.
[ There's a cheerful face looking up at you, despite all the weird and terrible things that have been going on lately. ]

Afternoon! I am Meriadoc Brandybuck, and as a bit of an effort to combat some of the awfulness around us with more cheerful things, I figured I might take the time to get some of the more legal aspects of certain events out of the way. If anyone can direct me to a lawyer of some sort, I'd appreciate the help in drawing up some documents.

[ Things like, say, a will & testament, a marriage license, and something not-unlike adoption papers if still different. Best be prepared. ]

I understand that very few people have any concept of Hobbit Legal Code, but I can certainly help on those aspects, so long as someone knows the basics of civil contracts.

[ There is a pause, as he looks down and fiddles with something in his lap before returning the camera ]

Also! If anyone has talents in baking or other things I would be most interested in recruiting your help for a way to lift spirits.

[ There isn't much use raging over things that can't be changed, and bright hearts and good feelings do amazing things in the face of despair. Merry knows something of that. ]

[Cecil is in his room, shuddering, arms wrapped tightly around his body. Is it fear? Is it the cold?

His closet door is open, and there's a bedsheet draped over it -- covering the mirror.

Cecil's fingers press into his sides, pulling at the fabric of his shirt, nearly tearing it. He stares straight ahead, his bright eyes wide; unseeing.]

My mother always said that it would be a mirror.

Hey. Bored people.

What're your feelings on AIs?

[ after the jump teresa expected things to make more sense, like something would reveal itself, but it hasn't. if anything it poses more questions than answers. there seems to be only one place to go for that. nothing else to lose at this point. (she'd been meaning to ask earlier anyway.)

with soft black hair falling around tensed-up shoulders and pale skin glowing in contrast, she looks into the recording. her face doesn't display much emotion besides a tired concentration and slight quiver to her lip. it's been a long few days, but she does her best to hide it. ]

So, it's like going from one creepy experiment to the next. Ever thought that maybe that's what this place is? A test? A code to be deciphered? From it seems like, every month something horrible happens. Couldn't those all be variables we're supposed to respond to a certain way? Things probably won't change until we do.

[ right or wrong, teresa speaks from experience, so she sounds confident about this theory. she looks like she wants to ask a million more questions, but she stops her theorizing there. ]

Anyway, I'm Teresa. New-ish. I know we're sick of hearing about the temperature, but I'm not the only one whose room is freezing, right? I thought the heat was bad before, but no. This is actually worse. I could use a jacket or something if anyone has some extra clothes I can borrow.

[ because she would really like to go to bed and not wake up with hypothermia. ]
[ jax is fiddling with his comm, tosses it down on the table after a moment while reaching for the cigarette tucked behind his ear. he looks subdued, shaky, but he visibly steadies himself. anderson is watching him, shoulders straight and expression calm. ]

Listen up, we got business to talk about. Anderson and me, we noticed gunnery needs bodies. Any of you who can shoot, think about stopping by. We could use you.

[ jax breaks off, ducking his head to light his cigarette. and with that introduction out of the way, anderson chimes in: ] If you can’t, but you would be willing to learn, we can teach you.

Never too late to learn your way around a gun, right? And Anderson here, she’ll teach you some self-defense hand-to-hand shit too, if you want.

[ she nods, confirming that. ] There seems to be a shortage in all departments, but if you are at all inclined to fight in order to protect not just yourself but others as well, stop by to talk to us. [ anderson is ever the idealist. jax snorts, blows out a stream of smoke. ]

Or if you just wanna learn to shoot, but you aren’t looking to join. We got nothing against giving some lessons. [ jax spins his lighter in his fingers, stops when he nearly drops it. he glances at anderson. ] You good?

[ smoking will kill you, anderson doesn’t say, raising her eyebrows. instead, she gives a sharp nod. ] Yes. [ and reaches over to the table to turn off the comm.

gunnery out, tranquility.

[it's been a while since Anne has shown her face on the network, and she doesn't look any less grumpy now than she did last time. She's sitting with her back up against a wall, and she's not wearing her uniform jacket, so with her short-sleeved buttonup, her forearms are visible. She's stating at the identifying tattoo there, and then after a moment she holds her arm out to make the mark readable to the camera]

So a while back, I joined security, and the next morning I woke up with "sec" added to the beginning of this thing. But how exactly do they do it? Because I sure as hell don't remember it happening. Does anybody else? I know these numbers are basically an ID badge. But what I want to know is how they get to us to change them. Any information would be great.

[with that, she cuts the feed]

[Private video to Murphy Pendleton, sent out some time later]

How're you holding up, Pendleton?

[she knows he's a grown man (hell, he's probably ten years her senior), but she can't help feeling a little responsible for him, after how much her father cared about him]

It's been a while. Just want to check and see how you were doing. I might stop by and see you, if you wouldn't mind.

[ Carolyn hasn't been here for long but she's been here long enough to notice things, and one of the things she's noticed is that most of these people have no real idea of how dangerous space can be. Some of them, sure -- Riddick, of course. Ellen, Kara, Clarke, Kirk and his crew -- but there are others who've never been in space before, even people who come from a place where it isn't possible yet. Fry doesn't want these people to die because of a stupid mistake, and she doesn't want a stupid mistake to be what kills all of them out here, either. ]

There are a lot of people here who haven't been in space before. I'm going to give you all some advice -- and honestly, if you know someone who's been in space, who knows spaceships, listen to them about this sort of thing. I know weird shit happens on this ship, but that smiley face isn't the only hazard out here.

I'm going to give you all a list of some of the dangers in space -- verbally, as there have been complaints [ you're welcome, Ros ] but I can give you a text version, too. If you have questions, feel free to ask, though I'm not a doctor or a physicist or an engineer and you might be better off asking one of them about some of these. And before anyone says it, I'm not trying to cause mass panic here -- but these are things you need to know, things everyone needs to keep in mind so nothing stupid and lethal happens.

space: where everything will try to kill you )

It's been eight months without the ship imploding on itself. Let's keep these in mind and not do something stupid to change that. I don't care if you're a psychotic mass murderer who thinks it'd be fun; you do one of these and you're probably going to end up dead, too.

[the first thing visible is just a plethora of green. if that doesn't tip you off that she's sitting in the oxygen garden, then i don't know what will. small hands are turning the comm over and over, and there are flashes of blue fabric and shoes every few seconds.

finally, it comes to settle on her face--all big blue eyes and straw-blonde bangs. there's a velvet ribbon colored gold tied up in her hair. sadly, the shot is upside-down. seeming to realize this, she flips the device over and tilts her head. long, straight hair falls over one shoulder and one tiny, white wing is visible behind her.

she suddenly seems very agitated; her brow furrows and she looks rather pleading and sad. the video post ends, and next comes text:]

[ The video is turned on, showing a woman with short blonde hair with a serious expression on her face. Her arms appear to be crossed over her chest, number obscured by the way they’re settled. ]

My name is Carolyn Fry. I am [ and here there’s a slight pause, her posture straightening ] the captain of the Hunter Gratzner and a pilot. I’d like information on the layout of this ship, the shuttles, the chain of command, and everyone’s experiences here. I want to know what I’m dealing with, or at least be as well-informed as everyone who’s been here for a while. Don't worry about saying something that someone else might have already said; I'm interested in your personal experiences, as well.

[ There’s another pause here. ] Thank you.

[ One hand moves, as if to shut off the feed, but then Fry adds something else. ] And Riddick? I'd appreciate it if you spoke up, all things considered. [ You know exactly what she's talking about, big guy. And next time you're trying to hide yourself from people, work on not having such a distinct voice. ]
A friendly reminder that lest we wind up like the body the gentleman found earlier, it would be wise to keep an eye on each other.

We wouldn't want anything terrible to happen, would we? I certainly wouldn't.

[there comes a point in every young boy's life where frustrations grow too strong and all you want to do is hit things. or fuck. this is what happens when you cut yourself off from all possible outlets and are left stewing in your own juices for too long. enjoy, ataraxion.]

the next jump is this week, and we've just got to trust that those pods are safe now? yeah, we have that cure, but who the fuck knows if it's still going to work if shit happens again. don't know about you guys, but i think i'll pass on the sickness this time round

then we've got :) running around trying to cause shit. and then it turns around and helps?

As pointed out in a recent transmission, there are some individuals here who resemble one another. There are others whose worlds are similar to others', while others still have worlds that differ radically.

The following is a survey designed to attempt to determine whose worlds are most similar to whose. As a full disclaimer, I am not a trained sociologist/demographist, nor do I claim to be. My credentials extend no further than merely dabbling in disciplines related to those and having studied the science of writing the census briefly when I was younger. Nevertheless, I believe this may be a useful diagnostic tool.

I would encourage everyone who sees this to take a look at others' responses. If you see something familiar, please discuss with the other individual what that similarity is; from there, please try to determine just how similar/different your worlds are.

This is completely optional.

The survey can be found after this break in the text. )
