( 001 ) PARKER'S POV | TEXT/IMAGE
NEW SURROUNDINGS I read the FAQ and stuff...It's gonna take a while to get used to things - but I guess I'm pretty adaptable. Waking up in blue goo is pretty surreal. Do you ever get used to it? | |||
video.
VIDEO
Um yeah, well, a picture does say a thousand words. I guess.
[ a beat. ]
You been here a while?
VIDEO
[ a little laugh, then a thoughtful hum. ]
This was my fourth jump, so -- three months, I believe.

Oxygen Gardens? Um, where is that and - What's there? But like - honestly. You can take a photo of anything and depending on how you capture it - it can still be interesting.
no subject
The Oxygen Garden is an area in the ship accessible by the pinkish-purple colored lifts. Lots of trees and plants, and a few insects here and there. A wonderful place for relaxing, though one has to be mindful not to trample the crops being grown there. [ cheerfully: ] I'm afraid I've never known much about cameras, but maybe you'll find something of interest there?
no subject
Oh, that's pretty cool. I dunno, I prefer taking pictures of motion. I mean, there's something really fascinating about movement. But thanks for the recommendation.
So there's nothing else scenic here? Like I can't take a picture of the stars or something?
no subject
[ pause, and a little laugh before he adds, mostly joking: ]
Though I suppose if you're looking for moving subjects, there's quite the number of interesting people on board. Given how little entertainment there is, perhaps you could find someone to model for you?
no subject
Yeah, but I get the whole risk behind it. Don't wanna accidentally get shoved out an airlock for a picture. You think I can get a model?
[ a beat. ]
So with little entertainment, I take it we can't - get internet up in space or something?
no subject
[ a little amused noise, and then -- pause. blink. a look of genuine confusion because -- ]
Ah, I'm sorry. 'Internet?'
[ oh boy ]
no subject
You don't get internet where you're from? or - when you're from? I dunno.
no subject
[ what a silly sounding word. ]
I'm afraid these aren't terms I'm familiar with it. Does this 'internet' have anything to do with devices like the ones we're speaking on?
no subject
Yeah, like. It's kind of like this massive library of information and people can submit content to it and relay that content to each other even when they're countries apart. Hyper text transfer protocol and stuff. Kinda like these devices, except the internet's a lot more entertaining.
[ a beat. ]
Bing is kind of a service people use to find content on the network.
no subject
... hyper text transfer. A massive library of entertainment that can be transmitted over long distances. So -- somewhat like radio signals. But similar to these devices. So with visuals? [ totally not getting it. ]
I take it this 'bing' is like a librarian, then?
/jacks
[Hey Soysauce. Why are you learning about the internet from random people? They'll tell you lies like that Bing is a decent search engine and shit.]
Guess you can call it like radio, but with video and info and more'n that. It's like all the shit we're starting to store here on the network, but this is fuckin' tiny, in comparison.
no subject
[ and then, pause. ]
So, the 'internet' is somewhat like a much larger version of this network. And ... there's a service for finding content that is incorrect? Is that to weed out information that may be misleading?
no subject
Yeah, yeah you're gettin' it. And there's these things called search 'engines' that help you find the shit you want, only some of them are assbackwards cockmongers who don't know valid search criteria from own nutsack.
no subject
Search engines, yes. So these are -- actual machines, if they contain engines? Made to imitate the way a person would look for information? Or are they merely devices similar to these ones used for communication?
no subject
Nah they're not actual machines, but they act like them. They're programs that do what you said, look for info for you like you would if you were rifling through an old fashioned library.

AND IT BEGINS.
[ OH NO GEEK BATTLE. ]
Google feed syndication doesn't turn up with good results anyway with how much people give into Search Engine Optimization. It's not really about the quality of content but how many keywords a guy can jam into a web page. At least bing keeps things honest.
[ JUST SAYING. ]
GEEK RAGE
[He doesn't think you're from where he's from but Bing is Bing and Google is Google, no matter what reality you're from. And no matter what reality, Bing sucks huge fat Hackman cock, okay.]
Bing assumes you're functionally retarded with it's autocorrect bullshit and changes your own searches to what it thinks you really want. You wanna talk about shitty results? Apparently relevance is overrated.
no subject
[ a beat. that said he does have a 'droid. ( PARKER WHY ARE YOU USING BING ) ]
Look, it's just - googles a pretty terrible search engine. Bing turns up results that matter.

[ A beat. ]
So - I gotta ask. When are you from?
no subject
[ a deep inhale, then a sigh before he gives a sheepish laugh. ] I suppose I'm a bit behind the times, compared to most others here? The year was 1952, where I'm from. So I'm afraid I've still much to learn.
