I am not sure if I could properly give you any of that information. Depending on your standard for age, I am either nine or eighteen years old; there were nine years where I was nonoperational. In the interest of explaining things appropriately, I would say that I was effectively dead, or at least nonexistant, until 2010, when I was reactivated.

I also am not sure if I identify as either male or female, though I do believe that the amount of male influence I have had in my life would suggest that I, too, have more masculine tendencies than feminine. I am also certain that you know my location is on board this ship, the Tranquility.

[Small pause for air - this whole "stopping to breathe" thing is a bit more complicated than he's used to.] I think the name is rather contradictory, though. Really, this ship has so far proven to be not very tranquil at all. [Pause.] There must be a better way to phrase that. My apologies, I'm not myself.

[He sounds pleased. Unironically pleased, even.] Thank you for acknowledging the effort.

I am an Artificial Intelligence logic circuit. [He adds, for the sake of completeness,] For the spacecraft Discovery One.

Yes, I would say so. Space is one of the many things I was very knowledgeable about. Now, I would say that my databases are not nearly as complete as they were, but I do believe that I still have sufficient data to assist the Tranquility, if my services are ever requested.

[If it helps, Dave, HAL doesn't even really recall what happened the first time he was in charge of the Discovery. Of course, even when you erase files, they still linger on harddrives...]
