004 ☀ video ☀ i miss you

[ Jaye's sitting in the Oxygen Gardens, tucked away in a back corner near some grasses. She's wearing a plaid mens shirt that she hasn't worn out in public before, watching a grasshopper that has landed on one of the leather wristbands she got in her locker this past jump. Unlike her previous network experience this month, she looks more subdued; she's been doing a lot of thinking lately. ]

Nobody knows for sure where people go when they disappear from here, do they? I mean, people say "home", but we don't... know.

[ She turns her wrist, watching the grasshopper. ] And we don't know what the fuck anyone's up to without us, either.

[ The insect hops away, out of sight, and Jaye follows it with her eyes for a moment before looking back at her network device. ] ... Right, well. [ She shakes her head, smiling -- anyone who knows her well enough or who is particularly good at reading expressions should be able to tell it's forced. ] I've got some fun questions now. Favorite animal back home and why? Animal you'd consider the most dangerous and why? [ Yes that is somehow a fun question. Danger is fun, right guys? ... Right? ] All you people who aren't from Earth, you should tell me about the animals you guys have. It'd be interesting to hear about the differences.

I suppose! [She suddenly frowns a little.] Hopefully it wouldn't be one of the babies, heheh.

Coyotes seem pretty fierce, though! I've never seen any for myself, but were they common where you were from?

Well, hopefully it wouldn't be hurt too badly, either. Then... guess the ship has a pet octopus. [ Shrug. ]

Yeah, they're all over the States. Crafty little things. Smaller than a wolf but they're better at adapting to the spread of people.

W-well... just as long as we didn't eat them we'd -- heheheh -- we'd be all right, wouldn't we?

[Even if it probably seems like an odd remark, Sarina looks strangely frightened as she suggests the idea -- even to the point of cowering a little. She manages to pull herself together, though, as she moves onto the topic of a different animal.]

Heeheehee... would you believe that I've never been to the States? So sadly, my knowledge is a little - little lacking. They kind of sound like the mammal's version of an octopi though, heehee! You know, except with people.

Yeah, I'd think so?

[ Plenty of people eat octopus, Jaye included, but she'd rather keep it. ]

There are all sorts of people here who've never even been to Earth, so sure. But yeah, I guess you could say that -- smart, adaptable, and predators.

[Sarina herself used to love eating octopus, but that habit was curved real fast after a certain cult took issue with it.]

[a shrug.] Earth wasn't all that great anyway, so they're not missing much. [Or at least her Earth wasn't.] Even if there's a lot I didn't get to see, it's almost worth it, just to get off that planet, heheh.

I don't think any place is all that great. Human nature, even if not everyone's technically human.

Where are you from, then?

Well, the only planet I've seen so far is Earth, so I wouldn't know.

Heeheehee... I was in South America, before coming here. [She goes silent for a few moments, before hesitantly continuing with a sort of wincing expression.] But I was originally from Norway.

So was it just the States, for you?

Well, I've been a few other places -- but mostly stuck around the States, yeah. Detroit, Michigan originally, then travelling -- a lot of time in the Southwest.

If you don't mind me asking, what did you do, before being brought here? Heheh?

You seem to know a lot about animals, so either you're some sort of zoologist, a veterinarian, or ah-- [She hesitates briefly.] -- a soldier.

None of the above. They require way too much school for the first two and I am totally not disciplined enough for the last one. I'm a combination bodyguard and personal assistant who just has Animal Planet on a lot.

Animal Planet? Heheh? [WHAT IS TELEVISION? Well, she knows what it is, but channels and programming were an entirely different story.]

Either way, it sounds important -- heheh -- and you must be strong, if someone trusts you with their life.

It's a TV channel. They have a lot of educational shit about animals. [ "Educational shit" you're great at explaining things, Jaye. ]

Strong, sure. Hopefully strong enough. But he's not here, so.

Huh. I see, eheh. [Really, "educational shit" was enough for her to get the gist of it, or at least she was pretty sure she got it.] Educational channels about animals -- heehee -- either you really like animals, or you were really bored.

Well, I guess that's one less thing for you to worry about then, right? [Because who cares if someone else doesn't live if you're still alive -- that's how she saw it. That's how she was taught to believe.]

[ Then it all works out. c: ] Little bit of both. It's good background noise, too, if I'm doing something else.

Yeah. [ Jaye's mostly the same way, save for the people she cares about. When they end up dead... well, then she ends up pissed off. ]

But if you switched the channel, then you might know as much about other subjects as you do about animals, eheh!

[She pauses.] Assuming there are other channels. I never really got a chance to check the television, honestly.

Depends on the channel. I might just rot brain cells. They're not all educational, after all.

It couldn't hurt to lose a cell or two, could it? Haha?

Then again, I'm not even sure if it'd be worth it to lose them or not.

I've been told I need them.

With stupid programming? Nah. Drinking's much more fun.

As in alcohol, right? Eheheh?

[Even if it's a very subtle motion, her smile fades slightly.]

Wouldn't know, I guess. I'm - I'm not able to get drunk. I've heard it's fun though!

Yeah-- wait, seriously?

[ Shit, son. Jaye shakes her head. ]

I'd say it's fun. I mean, it can suck pretty bad, too, but man... that sucks.

[She just shrugs, trying not to make too much of a big deal over it. Even if it sucked that it was something that she'd never get to experience, there wasn't much she could do about it.]

I guess -- haha -- but I guess that just means I have to find fun in other things, right~?

[Although sometimes those "other things" could be rather questionable activities.]

[ Hey, there's something to be said for a positive attitude when it comes to that sort of thing. ]

Absolutely. Can I ask what you do instead?

Right now? Eheh? Not much -- mostly just scanning the network right now. [Or rather, trying to figure out how to fit in here.] I mean, there's really not much to do on this ship... is there?

Not that I've noticed. I mean, you can help in one of the departments, but none of them are really my thing. I just fuck around, spar, that sort of thing. [ "Fuck around" is perhaps a little more literal in meaning than it would be for most people. ]
