captain's log | oo1 | video
[Jim's in engineering, you can see the room behind where he sits. he looks a little tired, but his eyes are as bright as ever as he looks into the camera.]
Hey all, Kirk here.
We've been up here for about a week, ship's time, which probably seems like forever and no time at all for most of you. Trust me when I say that probably won't change much. I know a lot of you are still panicking, but we need to keep in mind that the only way we're going to get out of this situation safely is by staying calm.
Anyone still adjusting to their human body should remember to stop by medical. A week is more than long enough to mess yourself up, even if you know what you're doing. [his tone says, trust me, i've been there.]
If the internal clock is anything to go by, we'll arrive at Tansei Station in about 12 days. I know we don't have much with us, but if you're thinking you need something, you might want to consider what you can barter when we get there. There's no telling when our next chance at shore leave will happen again.
[here, Jim glances away, keying something in, and anyone who expressed interest to Resnik and Ward in their broadcast concerning data collection will get a ping before he goes on.]
> open broadcast > attn $data collection team/$resnik/$ward
I've managed to get the chronometer back online, but she won't give me anything outside of a 24 hour count. [so no stardates or the equivalent thereof.] I've been trying to pull up a map of this place for the passed 78 hours but it's like the damn thing never existed in the first place. I'm starting to wonder if a blueprint was even put in the databanks.

Spock, status report. How's that list of personnel coming?
> to: $scienceAteam | text | encryption 100%
Hey guys, anyone have updates on that theory we had going?
Or an idea of how to get some private communication set up? I don't know about you, but I'm starting to doubt how safe these encryptions are if the computer system is smiling at our resident technopaths.

And Connor. Add the thirteen year old? Dave Strider? is it? into that mix as well. Nothing against Connor, it's just, he's adequately versed in media.
Also, if Encryption is an issue, why don't we just converse in person?

Spock mentioned pinpointing a commonality. I think it was 21st century Earth? We might want to survey and see who else might fit the bill. [ A beat. ] Or we can just dangle the captain's name out a little longer. See who bites.
If the concern's in observation, meeting in person might not alleviate that. A ship this large has to have a monitoring system in place. To what extent, though— that's to be seen. But they could be just as easily accessed by a technopath, if they knew where to look.

Although suspicious activity simply breeds suspicion.
We should also consider filing through commonality of mediums. I am allegedly from literature while if memory serves right, Spock and Captain Kirk are part of some science fiction - was it a movie? We should further subdivide into genre as well.

Actually, the characters of Kirk and Spock are from a television show originals, with several film spinoffs. The most recent one is where they're from. The two versions, here, I mean, from the latest movie. The reboot. It's complicated.
And this version of you is from a television show too—BBC, I think, haven't actually watched it yet. Saw some previews though. Looked good! Modern version of your original book self, I think, since you're originally placed in Victorian London.
[ He stops, then returns to Sherlock's original concern. ]
I haven't seen any camera. 'Least, not any so obvious as the CCTV type. Maybe they're microcameras? Microspeakers, too?
And I like the code idea. One or two select code words might be helpful. [ SECRET SCIENCE! ]

Anyone else readily recognizable?
As for microcameras, it's a possibility. It seems like extra effort for a colonization ship, but for all I know, that kind of tech is baseline standard for this kind of vessel. If we were really concerned, we could do sweeps, but that'd just bring extra attention to ourselves.

[ as to the rest- well. the fact that he's accepted the likelihood of fiction- doesn't serve to make him any less curious. ]

We don't want to scare them. [yet.]
But I wouldn't negate the idea of the the cameras being there. Colonization vessel or not, this place will still need security. Even if Resnik and Ward aren't staying on top of it- I still think we should exercise caution.
[smiling computers, guys]

[ A pause at Connor's statement ]
Odd, I was under the presumption, that I was a piece of classic literature. Of course, the BBC has to go make a television series. As for 'code words' - it would have to be something all of us could easily slip into a conversation; but distinct enough that it doesn't send us on edge. It could do as a signature for when danger is approaching or something similar to that.

Um. Though I did recently talk to someone about acquiring their music collection, so maybe we can start with that—see who recognizes stuff, find some commonalities there. Making references is probably the best way to gauge people who 'get it', I suppose.
