-- Can I say one thing, about the final frontier?

I thought it was supposed to be a little grander than this. [ THOUGHTFUL PAUSE. ] More lights, you know, and perhaps more windows in the ship so we could actually see things.

But as a measure of curiosity, show of hands, how many of us are just from good old Earth? Been to the moon and not much further, that sort of thing? Because an awful lot of you seem very at home on a bloody spaceship, and I'm feeling a little left out.

The romanticized version of space travel is incredibly pervasive in human culture, but in reality, most spacecraft do not windows, and lighting is usually kept simple, to provide the passengers with an easy way of identifying areas of the ship and making their way around.

Also, you would not likely see very much, even if there were windows. Space is, after all, simply a vacuum, where the closest objects are usually many hundreds of thousands of kilometers away.

A fellow earth dweller, much displaced and not aware of much space activity besides the moon. I liked my fair share of science fiction when I was younger, but living it doesn't quite have the same allure.

Sorry, can't help you. There's a few Earths where I'm from, but... Howling Earth. Silent Earth. Not plain old earth and not a moon, either. There seem to be quite a number of 'Earthlings,' as it were, on board. I suspect it's a favourable planet in many dimensions.
