Guessing everyone's feeling a little closer to compos mentis now. Great, that's gonna make this a whole lot easier.

My name is Nathan Petrelli. I'm Senator for New York, elected representative of the people, and recently made Head of Homeland Security by the President himself. It's my job to do what's in the best interests of the people, and in this case I figure that's gonna be easier said than done.

I don't want any of you to worry. Once I get up to speed on the details of what's going on here, I intend to get to the bottom of how we got here, why we were brought here, and how to go about getting back. And I mean how and why, not the bullshit they've been feeding you about jumping and wormholes and the ship needing a crew. There's a malicious intent here I'm gonna address, and then I'm getting everyone back where we belong.

I realise we're not all Americans here, and maybe you think I have no jurisdiction, but I earned the right to intervene the moment I woke up with a tube shoved down my throat, just like everyone else. I want to speak to people who know the most about this place, or be directed toward them. Captain Kirk: you're on my list for starters, but I'd rather speak to the real Captain, rather than some washed up wannabe.

Oh, and before I wrap this up, there's one other thing. A few of you will have spoken to my brother, Peter; he got here during the 'jump' previous to this one, and as I understand it he's been pretty liberal with his imagination ever since. Some time ago my brother convinced himself that he could fly. He stood on top of a twelve story building one day, called me up and told me he was going to show me he could do it. He jumped, and he fell - fortunately only as far as the fire escape - and a couple days later woke up in the hospital with minor injuries. It wasn't long after my father's death, right in the middle of my run for Congress, and I guess he was desperate for attention.

What I'm trying to say is that he's had brushes with depression before - it runs in the family - and he's not exactly stable right now. All of this doesn't make it any easier. If everyone could please be delicate with him, take what he says with a grain of salt, and inform me if it sounds like he's planning to do something that might hurt himself or others. I appreciate it.

It's pre-Rising and doesn't really have to do with pop culture, so Buffy can't say the name means anything to her, but the year is surprising enough to make her smile slip for a second, because it's pre-Rising. Then it's back, but there's some worry underneath it, even if she triest to stay light as she speaks.]

We're on a ship like this and you think it's still '07?

It was for me. And that's assuming this really is a ship, when the only proof we have is whether or not we trust our own eyes.

I used to be an attorney, I'm not used to taking much of anything for granted.

If I'm not going to trust my eyes, ears, or sense of touch, then what exactly am I supposed to be trusting?

This isn't like anything like what we have where -- and when -- I come from.

[ He looks dead serious. ]

Or you can put your faith in people.

You have to, to some degree.

The question is which people.

[Buffy doesn't sound like she thinks which people is that hard of a decision to make.]

[ He tilts his head very slightly. ]

I'd be interested to hear which people you have in mind.

[ Buffy frowns a little, but she's tried to be as straight as she can about these things. ]

It's not so much a matter of particular people as it is their moral values, you know?

Well of course. [ That's how you choose anyone you vote for, isn't it? ] But I'm looking to find the people that others believe in; it's sort of the whole point. I wanna hear how things are from them.

[ She hasn't met anyone else who seems like he's in charge besides him. ]

[ An understanding tilt of his head. ]

You sounded like you might've been here longer. So, what's your name?

Are you going to try to set up elections here if there aren't any already?

Elections? I don't know how good an idea that'd be. There's already some kind of command structure in place. Maybe getting involved in that is a better plan.

But if it isn't already a democratic process then shouldn't there be one?

[ George would be so much better to discuss this than Buffy is equipped to. ]

But then, I really don't know how things work yet. And neither do you, it sounds like.

I know how a ship works. Spent some time on an aircraft carrier.

I haven't.

But do you think this works the same?

Advancement by merit? Yeah, I should think so. Ship's systems aren't something you just play around with. I flew jet planes up to twelve years ago, and the idea of someone messing around with the switches and toggles in there scares me to death.

If there are a lot of us, and there do seem to be, then being a leader may not mean the same thing as being the one who messes the switches and toggles.

No. That's what a crew's for, and they're no less critical for ship operations.

I thought you said us being taken wasn't about having a crew.

I'm saying that's how a ship works. It's not a Senate. If it were, it'd be going down in flames.

Right. So I'm just completely confused now.
