[Ruby's in the kitchen, nursing a cup of coffee. She looks tired, though not overly so. Adapting to life on board isn't going all that great for her - but thank whatever deity you want to insert here for coffee, because Ruby is just going to survive on that. Hey, Grenny pestered her with early morning diner shifts often enough, and Ruby isn't ashamed to admit that she's addicted. Doesn't mean she's gonna kick the habit anytime soon. She smiles at the camera, friendly as always.]

Hey guys. Ruby here, for those I haven't met yet. Pleasure to meet you, not pleased about the weird circumstances, you know how it goes.

Two things... first of all. I gather I'm not the only one hallucinating. Or... having dreams. Memories. I'm not awake enough to puzzle that out. Is this some sort of... group hallucination, and what's so interesting about two people talking about how hot some prisoner is, anyway? Do I need to be concerned? Do I need to... I don't know, do anything about this, report it to anyone?

[She rubs a face down her hands, smiles, because all this sounds insane, but it seems to be common practice here.]

Second thing... well. I was wondering. I'll admit, I'm not the brightest bulb to ever light the room. So... we're in space. And I was just wondering, if you were. Say. Sensitive to the moon.

[Yeah, this is harder than she'd thought. Crap. Ruby takes a long sip of her coffee, a little too hot for comfort, but the burn is quite welcome right now. She can't exactly go saying that she's a werewolf and very likely to kill anything that moves in front of her during three months a night, because she doesn't think she'll be in control of the wolf after not transforming for a whooping 28 years, plus she doesn't have the magical cloak that'll prevent the transformation - yeah, that's not gonna get her pushed out of an air lock at all. She's had enough angry mobs after her in her own time.]

Are we in any way affected by moon cycles, given that we... well. Have no... moon of our own?

[Yeah, it sounds even more stupid when she says it out loud, but does the truth of her little problem really sound any less stupid?]

[Ruby looks sheepish at that. Okay, so she screwed up again. Big surprise there, she tends to do that.]

I didn't want to... sorry. I'm just panicking, I guess. I don't want to hurt anyone.

[It has occurred to her of course that she might get hurt - but really, that's not nearly as relevant.]

You won't. None of us ever have.

[ which is important, though probably not for the reasons she'll assume ]

I have.

[There's a catch in her voice when Ruby speaks again, after a pause. She's not... crying, not really, although she'd be lying if she claimed her eyes to be dry. The roiling in her guts is growing worse every day, and she isn't sure how bad it will be, if she can remain in control or will drown beneath something wild and primal and hungry.]

[ there's a pause, derek taking that in. he'd meant the ship when he'd said that, didn't mean to vouch for who had done what at home. ]

I won't let you.

[ he keeps his voice even, steady. ]

We have a place. It can hold you. It held you last time.

[And when he promises that... oddly enough, Ruby believes him. Nods, even though she knows he can't see her. Derek's convinced he can help her, and she finds it easy to trust that in this situation, he knows best.

After all, apparently he's already done it for her once. So... it's gonna be okay... right?]

I'm not sure when it'll happen. Back home, I still had a few days. Now I feel like something's stirring in my guts, constantly.

[She's afraid, and that will make her attempts to wrestle control back all the more difficult. Damn, it's been years since she was scared of the wolf, of transforming. Feels like all her progress is lost.]

It'll be three nights, not just the one.

We can deal with three nights.

[ how many nights had he sat outside waiting for josh to turn back? way more than three. he could handle this. it would be fine, derek would make sure of it. ]

When it happens, you'll have to keep track. Count the days. It's how you'll know when it's time again.

I can do that.

[It's simple enough that not even Ruby can screw it up. She takes a shaky breath. Strange, how she's only just met Derek - in her memory, at least - and yet she already hangs all her hopes and fears onto him. Usually Ruby's not prone to do that - but desperate times, and so on. She's gotta believe he can do for her what Anita and the pack managed.]

Thank you, Cupcake. I don't know what I'd do without you. I... I'll find a way to repay you for all of this, I promise.

[ there's uncertainty on derek's end, like he doesn't know what to do with her gratitude. ]

You don't have to repay me.

[ before he would have said it's what pack did for pack, but he isn't pushing that issue anymore. ]

[Yeah, that just settles it. Ruby's gonna find a way to repay Derek - now that he declines the offer, all the more. She's stubborn like that, and he's just basically ensured that he'll never get rid of her.

Ever.]

I know. Could be I want to, though.

[ derek just makes a noncommittal noise, shrugs his shoulders. ]

There's better things to want.

[ a pause and then-- ]

Be careful up here.

[Yeah, that just seals it. Ruby knows this need to deflect. Takes one to know one, etc, right? Too bad she's much too stubborn to be put off by that. Derek's gained a friend, whether he likes it or not.]

You two, okay Cupcake? I need you safe and sound.

[ derek almost laughs. ]

I'm not going anywhere. I can handle myself up here.

[He should have. Ruby would have been delighted, after all.]

You better be. I'll check, if I think you're just saying that.

I'm not just saying it. But you can check, if you want.

Hm, maybe I will. It's... kinda good to be among wolves again, y'know.
