There are no poems today, no joyful greetings, something is different. She looks more pensive than anything else but there is a shade of concern there as well as quiet annoyance.

How to mourn for someone who does not deserve it?

If your duty demands it and you have no desire to - do all men need to be mourned for? Is it a a more grievous sin not to mourn than it is to speak false words of grievance?

[ a beat. ]

[ a moment later she puts down her necklace, smiles. ]

I would have a cup of wine with your answer, if any of you have some to spare. You will join me in the lounge.

[ She sits for a second, considering. She pertains it to her own life. And then, past that. She muses abstractly. ]

I think everyone deserves to be mourned. Dictators have wives. Murderers have children. Families. It's a matter of, if you want to mourn. But, it's not an obligation. I think it depends. If I didn't mourn for someone, it's the guilt that I might be worried about. But, if there's no guilt there there's nothing saying you should or shouldn't mourn. That was a long winded way of saying it's up to you.

If I had any wine, I'd share it. Believe me.

There is no one else to mourn for the person in question on this ship. Yet at home...they do have a vast family.

I don't think cruel is the right word. Depending on who this person is to you, it could be disrespectful. And again, you might regret not mourning. But, without more information, I'm flying blind here.

Mourning is supposed to be a choice. It sort of defeats the purpose if you're forced to do it.

[ There's a moment when it looks as if Lydia wants to answer in so many different ways but she stops herself once and then again before she just shrugs. ]

You just don't mourn for them. That's the only way you should.

He was your husband. That won't change. He may have been the father of your children. He's dead. Mourn him if you want. But, it sounds like he was disrespectful, physically abusive and unworthy of calling himself your husband. So, I say, forget it. But, again, what you think is what matters.

[ she agrees, by the sound of it, by the way relief settles into her face. She is glad someone sees it her way. ]

Would that I could forget it all, my sweet Rachel. I would be all the happier. I mourn not his death but its consequences. Our marriage was the sole reason for the alliance between our families.

[ and it doesn't help that she is convinced her brother murdered him. ]

It has different purposes for different people, different situations.

It's supposed to make it easier, to give it a word that makes sense of everything you're feeling. The confusion, anger, and the hurt. Mourning is supposed to give you time to deal with all of those feelings.

It just doesn't work all the time.

If you don't have those feelings, if you're not really grieving then mourning will just give you time.

[ she frowns, still unsure if she cares at all. ]

Hey, she asked for wine, and given what she's talking about, it's probably a good idea to get some alcohol in her system.]

Hey, you. Heard you were askin' about wine. [She smiles, giving the bottle a little swirl.] It's not the best, but I make it myself.
