[There's a sudden brittleness in his voice when he answers, quite different from the tone he used even in the past when he was annoyed at Neal.]

Our longest conversation to date has consisted of Mr. Stark speaking with relish on the prospect of ejecting me from the airlock, and then expressing contempt for me when I told him that I found that unamusing, having in the past suffered - [He stops a moment, wondering why he's saying this; but he's committed, he realizes, and continues on - ] Oxygen deprivation myself. His response to this was to rant at some length about how difficult his life has been and to inform me that I was evidently ignorant of just everything that he - coddled billionaire evidently complaining about the privilege of having his father on board - had suffered.

[After a moment, he shoves his hands into his pockets, feeling suddenly rather ashamed.]

Sorry. I, ah - Forget all of that. We've had conflicts. Best to leave it at that.

[ neal laughs quietly, a few scratching sounds coming over the speakers. ]

But then again, so am I. He's just not nearly as charming about it as I am.

[There's just a moment of quiet before, grudgingly:]

[A pause, trying to move on before any victory laps can be taken - ]

Though I think saying that man is a "jackass" is akin to calling absinthe "a touch heady."

No, like I said-- I'm just more charming than he is. I'm not a very good man, or a particularly nice one when you get down to it. I just do a great job making people forget that.

Caffrey, you know me; you know how rarely I say anything remotely kind. Compliments and flattery are quite simply things I do not do. Superficial, glib charm is lost upon me; in point of fact, I find it tiresome, even loathsome.

Note that I didn't call you a good man, for labels such as "good" and "bad" are all but useless. I called you decent. [There's a rustle of fabric as he crosses his arms.] You're not cruel, after all - you would not, I think, call yourself cruel?

Right. Well, then, more objectively: have you ever acted from a deliberate desire to cause harm for no purpose other than your enjoyment?

I don't speak, mind, of being difficult, or making jokes, or to - I believe the term that the young people use is "troll." I mean have you ever actively tried to inflict physical or emotional harm because you'd enjoy seeing it done. And truly think about this answer; don't speak from any sort of masochistic impulse, but from genuine consideration.
