[ Abby's kept clear of the network despite having been on Tranquility for a month - partly because being social on a death ship wasn't her first priority, partly because most of her questions could be easily answered by Connor.

But if there's anything that can make her come out of her shell, it's animals. Animals and dinosaurs, which apparently exist here (at least the one does). The feed opens on her face, but the gardens are easily visible behind her. ]

This is Abby Maitland with the theoretical zoology department. [ She sounds only mildly aggrieved, mostly friendly. ]

Is there an official system for tracking the animals loose in the gardens? The ecosystem has managed fine thus far, but we might want to be more careful about interfering with it unchecked. I'm not even sure what some of these animals are eating. [ Hello, Myfanwy. ]

Enclosures might not be a bad idea either. I hate to lock anything up, but it would be in everyone's best interest if we can easily find them during emergencies - theirs included.

There's plenty of salvageable material in Engineering—a couple of fences wouldn't be too hard to put together.

Fencing might not be the best option. [ You know, wings. ] Is there anything we could use to build safe netting? Even just dividing the gardens into a few sections would help, allow us some controlled environments. [ A pause, then- ] Well, more controlled than we've got now.

I meant—generally. [ Fencing for the four-legged animals, not for Myfanwy; he's sure he could throw something together big enough to hold a pteranodon, but caging like that would take ages. ]

I'm not so sure about the netting, but I'll look around. Should be some rope... somewhere. [ Maybe. Probably. Enough to make a net? How do you make a net? ] We should probably map out the space we want to use before we start making stuff—probably good to avoid level one of the gardens, just 'cause it's pretty much overrun with important machinery. Wouldn't want any accidents to happen.

I know someone who does. I more specialize in putting them on or in the animals once they're made.

Any other animals, not counting the bugs... most days... are either in there with their people or it's me taking a nap.

I trust the system's worked well enough so far in terms of safety. Just wondering if we shouldn't establish something more official, considering how they seem to be multiplying with the jumps. [ And frankly she has no idea how nothing's gone wrong so far. ]

The direwolves that are sometimes found in the Gardens are the direwolves of House Stark. We do not let them run loose. They are not pets, but they are ours.

But you can't lock the other animals away either. They did not ask to be here. They need to be free so they do not grow restless.

Thank you, I appreciate it - do you have much experience with animals? If nothing else I might organize some volunteers to help make sure they all make it to the grav couches safely. I think most of them are accounted for, but there seem to be a few strays gathering each jump.

Thanks - I've heard in about a cow, good to know who the dinosaur belongs to. Can't say I was expecting to see a pteranodon here. [ No escaping the dinosaurs, apparently. ]

Also heard about the Starks. Is it a family?

If he catches this and you mention to him I told you, make sure he knows you mean the actual dinosaur.

And to a degree? There are a few modern Starks running around, but the ones with the wolves are a little more Ren Faire. But they're a family, yes.

If a lot of them are pets, I doubt people are going to want them to be enclosed in spots unless they're the ones making the enclosures. [ A beat. ] Just pointing that out, I mean, it's a nice idea, just not exactly good in actual practice.

Yeah, I've gotten that impression - though as you've said, most of the owners are open to enclosures so long as they've got input. I'm thinking microchipping might be a better option; would be tragic if we couldn't locate an animal in time for a jump.
