( three ) : video
[ Behold! On your screen is a whole plastic box-case thing of Reese's minis, the gold foil wrappers of each bite-sized piece winking in the horrible eye-blinding indoor lights of the ship. There's actually a reason for Isaac to be taking a video of an incredibly boring thing, though. ]

I found these in my locker after the jump. It's well over ten pounds of Reese's minis and is seriously too much candy for one person, so I'm giving a pound of these to the first couple people willing to sing Rolling in The Deep on the public network. [ No, really. He means it. ] And is there anyone on the ship who is Canadian and can play hockey and/or lacrosse? I've got my lacrosse stick and three balls to shoot, but not enough gear to really play. Or have anyone to play against.
[ There's also another thing, but it's slightly less boring. It's also a bit tricky, since it involves the monthly fur problem. ]
I'm also thinking of camping out on the gardens for a couple days, are the gardens back to being mostly safe again?

Oh, California. Well Mattie supposes that makes sense. Everyone in California is supposed to be rich from the gold strikes anyway, they probably have aluminum aplenty to throw around as well. ]
I would trade you leather for aluminum foil if you wanted.
It is better to be mad at the man who is responsible for you falling into the snake pit. I know where California is but I am not familiar with Mount Shasta. I have never been further West than Oklahoma.
video.
I've only ever been to the Oregon border, myself. And if someone pushes you into a snakepit, I think you need to change your friends, man, that stuff's not cool.
You don't have to trade for the foil, man, it's just candy. It'll be like ripping you off, and leather's really good.
—I'm Isaac, by the way. What's Arkansas like?
video.
What kind of candy? And you just said that the foil is made from aluminum and tinted with gold. How can it not be just as valuable as leather, if not more so? [ There is a thoughtful pause. ] I must admit that I do not have very much worth trading anyway. Only my shoes and Papa's belt. But I have not much use for the belt.
I am Mattie Ross. It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance, Isaac. I do not suppose Arkansas can be very much different from any other place. Yell County does not have grand cities, there is nothing like St. Louis or San Francisco. But it is good farm country, and I think it very pretty. It is less exciting than the Territory but not half as wild.
video.
And also, these? [ He holds up on of the Reese's. ] They're not tinted with real gold, for one. The foil's real, the gold isn't. So that on its own isn't as valuable as it seems.
Yell County sounds a lot like Beacon Hills, except replace farming with forestry and wildlife. Do you guys get snow too? We get snow and a lot of mountain lions and deer, so it's pretty dangerous in the cooler months, and summertime means a lot of fires if we're not careful.
video.
[ She cocks her head at the candy, still intrigued by it. ] Aluminum is valuable on its own. I think you are a poor trader, you are supposed to inflate the value of your property, not malign it.
It snows only rarely in Yell County, our weather is quite mild. There are deer as well, however, and bobcats and coyotes. And smaller things as well, of course. My Papa took me and my brother, Little Frank, hunting raccoons.
video.
You have a brother? I had one, too.
[ also he feels vaguely offended, what the. he's a believer of trading in good faith, why is this a bad thing? ]
I'm just saying, no one likes being ripped off, and I don't want to rip anyone off, okay? I have an active conscience, it's telling me trading chocolate for leather, regardless of the wrapper, isn't fair.
...Why was he trying to kill the other guy. Dude, what's going on with your story?
video.
I have a younger sister and younger brother both, Victoria and Little Frank. What was your brother's name? [ She catches the use of the past tense, and looks solemn as she asks her question. ]
Perhaps the local economy makes for a different situation. Were we in Arkansas, I could easily obtain a large quantity of leather for cheap, but chocolate in quantity would be a luxury.
Tom Chaney attacked Mister LaBeouf because he is a murderer and a coward, and we three -- myself and Mister LaBeouf and Rooster Cogburn, who is a Marshall -- were on his trail to bring him to justice. I hired Mister Cogburn myself and paid him one hundred dollars, on account of Tom Chaney shot my father and stole his horse and two California gold pieces.
video.
His name's Camden. Lahey, we're Laheys, both of us. You're the eldest?
And okay - how about this, you could... treat the chocolate as a loan? Pay me back somehow in the future? I'd take the belt, but that's your dad's and I don't really need a belt.
[ But the mention of a dad - now there's something familiar. ]
Did you get the guy who shot your dad, though?
video.
Papa's name is Frank Ross, that is why we call my brother Little Frank. [ The question wasn't asked, but they have been speaking about her father, so it seems an important detail to mention.
She considers the suggestion of a loan, chocolate in return for some equal barter at a later date. It seems reasonable, so she nods. ]
Agreed. I should feel unpleasant taking advantage of someone who is not aware of the proper values of things. I do not know what I might offer in return for payment but I am certain there will be something. I will not forget. I should shake your hand on it but that is impossible.
[ When the conversation returns to the topic of her father, Mattie's bold demeanor wilts a bit. She stands just as straight, but looks sad and a little troubled. ]
Yes, I shot him dead to rights with Mister LaBeouf's rifle and he went over the cliff.
video.
Hell, he tried to save Jackson. It's almost poetic, in its own way. ]
I'm glad you got the guy. And your ponies. They grow up to be good horses, right? Like if you take care of them well? I only have a bike, and Dad had a car, so it's not quite the same thing, but you take care of what you have, they take care of you right back.
—Sometimes adults act exactly as horribly as you thought they would when you were a kid, man. We don't have to shake on the candy, we're cool.
video.
I would rather have seen him hang but it was not to be. The ponies I sold back to Colonel Stonewell as we had no need of them with Papa gone. Except for one, I called him Little Blackie. He was the best horse you ever saw, and had a bigger heart than any horse twice his size. [ Her face lights up with pride as she talk about the pony, and then immediately saddens as she remembers what happened to him. ]
He is dead now too. He was so brave.
It has been my experience that most adults have not half as much sense as they make claim to.
