[ When the video flicks on, there's some really terrible shaky cam going down. Shots of the floor and ceiling interspersed with brief glimpses of Tyke's back, as Tommy tries to get a decent shot of the... Whatever it is. Like a stream of black sand moving through the air like smoke. ]

What the hell is that?

No fucking idea.

[ There's a dog barking at the black thing, shuffling fearfully on its paws but putting up a loud front. The camera jostles as Tommy shifts it to his other hand. ]

You're the one who's seen weird shit.

Yeah. Doesn't mean I've seen all the weird shit ever. [ She moves closer, crouching down next to the dog that's barking, putting a hand on its neck. It quiets down to growls. ] The dogs don't like it. I don't like it.

[ Tommy's response is just a grunt of affirmation. He's not sure he needed the dogs to figure that one out, but they're sure being clear about it. ]

Are you videoing? [ The camera catches Tyke glancing over her shoulder as she says it, noting that he is and nodding. Then the camera swings around, framing the lower left quarter of Tommy's face. ]

Anyone got something to add here?

Poke it with a stick or something, it's a rather worrisome phenomenon.

[ Alayne's voice is pinched with worry. And in the background there is the sound of a wolf's bark, followed by a growl, followed by a murmured hush now, Lady. ]

Whatever it is, you mustn't linger. No good can come from it. Even the animals know.

[ Tommy frowns a not very well-framed frown because he didn't mean to get Alayne worried. ]

[Not that she doesn't trust how her dogs react to things, but she also acknowledges that they are a little limited in perspective.]

Sometimes animals just don't know how to deal with things.

[ Tommy's willing to give some credence to a lot of the crazy stuff people say on this ship because the situation itself is kind of crazy, but: ]

[ The black smoke's back on camera, still whisking around, maybe a little faster than before. ]

This ain't some corner in engineering no one goes to. Next person to come around could be a kid.

They're not shying away. [Not completely.] They want to fight, they just don't know how.

[Conflicted between fighting and acknowledging the enemy is too big or strange. They're waiting for Tyke's orders.]

What the hell is that? [ that was not jenna's intentional reply, but the freaky smoke knocked that one right out of her brain for a minute. ] Not to sound like a wimp, but I'm for team 'get away from it right now, figure out answers later'. Where are you?

[ ...so she's actually for team 'go poke at it' but hey. details. ]

Hall, past one of the gardens on deck two-fifty. I'm not gonna touch it, [ since that seems to be the general consensus, and Tommy's prepared to trust the opinions of people who have to deal with weird shit like this more of than he does, ] but I can't just leave it.

[ Cat's tone is distinctly grumpy and unimpressed. ]

Like this place wasn't fucking weird enough anyway.

[ Grumpy and unimpressed are emotions Tommy can identify with in spades right now. Easier to be that then to admit he's freaked out by whatever this is. ]

Guess it decided we were getting bored.

[If either Tommy or Tyke have been paying attention to Dean's varying (and impressive) range of facial expressions since they met they might realize that the one he's broadcasting out to both of them now hasn't been seen before.

He looks furious and concerned all at once and, when he speaks, his voice has none of that usual asshole attitude it usually does - he sounds like a man who knows exactly what he's saying.]

Whatever the hell you do don't take your eyes off it. [There's a pause where he glances up from his device, the background of the video constantly moving. He's always on his way to the kitchens but this time it isn't to inhale food. This time it's for salt.]

Move.

[ Part of Tommy's not any good at being told what to do and doing it. But part of him's still a soldier and still has that kneejerk impulse to do what he's told when someone who sounds like they know what they're doing does the telling.

His expression, when it hovers into view, is a mix of both of those things. His eyes are fixed off-camera, though, following that instruction, at least. ]
