I hide it at home, but here nearly everyone I talk to already knows. I lie about it sometimes, though. I don't know why. I doubt anyone who wanted to hurt us could get away with it if they tried. I suppose I still worry about what people might think.

How long did it take you to stop?

I didn't tend to hide it at home. I don't really hide it here either, but sometimes I don't mention it right off the bat to newcomers. They're usually freaked out enough already without going into the whole off duty thing.

non-human is a term that needs more definition, too subjective. where is the line drawn between human and not, how biologically different does a human have to be before they stop?

At home it's a question of safety and on the ship it's a question of preference. My children are safer if I lie, at home; on the ship, I prefer not to bother catering to other people's comfort.
