002; text -- if you die in the dream, do you die in real life?
so hey, honesty & philosophy hour
if it's true what they say, and none of us remember our time here after we've left
are we even really here?
what i mean is, does it matter what we do here if we don't remember it?

but, i don't know. i don't think there's a way to know for sure. is there? unless you do something crazy and life-changing here and wait to see if anything's different when you go home. but even then you can't generalize from one person to the entire ship with any certainty. maybe it didn't matter for the one person, but maybe it's going to matter for someone else.
also people do fucked up things when they think there are no consequences. maybe its better for everyone to believe it matters even if we're not sure.

And I thought you might say something like that. But does it really? If it's like it never existed.

It's possible that when you go back for good, not just away and then back, that you do remember.

seraphim said the same-- that we're missing that piece of the puzzle.

That is not the end of it, of course, because it never is. When we dream, certainly we sense what we can sense when we are awake. How is one to say this is not entirely a dream? On the other hand, what if my other life was a dream, and I have always been here?
Then your mention of memories would come into question. When I was in my other life, I could not remember this ship, and now that I am here, I can still remember my other life. But then, just because one does not have the memory of this spaceship in the forefront of his mind does not mean he cannot remember it. Again speaking of Descartes, he weeps over a galliard and does not know why--only that he must have some memory which causes him pain, but one that he cannot bring forth. By that theory, yes, our actions would matter, or we might find ourselves sobbing over dances, and that would be a poor show.

Uh... wow. I think I understood about... maybe half of that? Give me a break, I'm only a high school student. You're gonna need to break it down a little.

So I'd have to say that it matters.

If there's a way in, there has to be a way back. We just don't know it yet.
But that's a fair argument, I guess.

But I guess it maybe matters right now? Like, we have to live it so we may as well not just... totally idle around?

the pessimist's is that, set on a long enough stretch of time, anything done in any realm will be forgotten. the mind decays, the body dies; family and friends won't keep what they recall of you alive forever, and theirs aren't likely to care enough to try. in a thousand or so years, with some exceptions, what our number does at home matters as much as what they do here — not at all.
[ she has A LOT OF FEELINGS about this, okay. ]
does this happen often? existential crisis hour.

this issue just hits a little close to home for me, that's all.
i had a friend back home who forgot all our time together. it was awful.

I do too, for the record.
I was hoping there'd be someone who'd respond saying that they went home and they did remember.
