[ Judging by the flash of furniture and kneecaps, Carolyn is crouching down next to her bed when she turns the video on. She's smiling today, but there's more than happiness there: there's wonder, awe, and a bit of surprise. ]

Spot had her kittens, [ she breathes, then turns the camera and carefully slides it under the furniture to get as much of an image as she can until the momma cat hisses at her. ]

I'm not sure how many there are yet. They're so small...

[ Her voice trails off, and Carolyn seems to realize that she's being overly sentimental about a bunch of kittens and shakes herself, standing. The motion seems to smooth her back into something harder, even if it's slightly ruined by her quick glance back toward the bed. ]

I didn't arrive on the ship with cats. Their original owners left, and they stayed behind. It may be a good idea for everyone to come up with a contingency plan for their possessions, in case they return home or something happens to them. This is especially true for animals, but if there's something that you'd especially like certain people to have, it could help guarantee that it gets to them.

[ KITTENS, THOUGH. ]

[B'awwww, kittens. Bela's heart is melting a little.]

I have a cat from home. She arrived a few jumps ago and I'd be worried if she got left here should I go back.

She'd been acting strangely at the jump. I'd wondered, but...

[ KITTENS. ]

[ Kittens do that to people. ]

Jones -- he's the father of this litter -- has been left here twice now. If I hadn't gone looking for his owner, he wouldn't have made it. It's... not something I would have wanted to explain, if she ever came back.

Is she okay? Are they okay? What are you gonna do with them? What do kittens eat? My friend, he's a vet assistant, he might know if you don't.

[ stiles take your adderall, jesus. ]

I think so. A few people have talked to me about getting one, when they're old enough.

[ But wait- ] As in... veterinarian? [ It's still a new word for her. ] He might be the only one on the ship, we've been looking.

God damn they're cute.

You didn't hear me say that.

[ you really are the cat lady, aren't you? ]

If you need a place for one of them when they're ready, I wouldn't mind helping with that.

[ because: KITTIES!!!]

Of course I didn't.

[ But she did she can't stop smiling because she helped with this (sort of), she was there and she took care of Spot and Jones and the kittens are all alive and so is Spot and for the first time in a long time, the thing surrounding her is life and not death. ]

Are you going to come see them? Talk about how not cute they are?

[ IT WAS TWO... ]

I've had a few offers already.

[ Headtilt. ] Have we met?

I think his job involved a lot of sweeping, but yeah. Scott's good with animals.

[ stiles shifts in his seat. he definitely can't ask for a kitten. he can barely manage to be responsible for lute, and his room-mate is sentient and doesn't rely on him. there are reasons he wasn't allowed a pet as a kid. ]

Can I come see them some time? The kittens. Get them used to people.

[ by letting them crawl all over him. ]

Oh, of course not. It's a good thing that you went and did that; others mightn't be so caring about the animals here.

The kittens are doing well?

Carolyn, they're beautiful.

[He thinks. They are pretty small.]

You must be proud.

[ a faint smile ]

No, not exactly.

[ she surprisingly isn't the most chatty of people anymore ]

I've seen you around - offering the space classes and such.

I'm part of the first wave. [ because that should explain everything, right? ]

Of course.

[ She smiles, reaching to scratch Jones behind the ears. The tomcat looks one part proud father and one part confused as to why Spot is hiding under the bed. ]

Though getting past their mother might be interesting.

I had no idea what I was doing. I'm still not sure I do.

[ But the kittens are doing well, and she nods. ] They have a protective mother.

Mostly relieved.

[ ... but proud, too. ]

[ It doesn't quite soothe her nerves. Jones headbutts her arm, however, tearing her attention away to stroke the tomcat behind the ears. ]

I'm surprised there hasn't been something like this before now.

I guess I could do that. So long as you remember that you never saw me.

I knew everything would be alright. Cats have been having kittens since...since there've been cats!

You're not really supposed to do much at this early stage.

[The kittens are alive, meaning that she's doing just fine.]

Good. She'll look out for them. You just keep an eye on her.

[ excuse him, he just had to set down his comm because of how loud he is laughing. ]

Don't make me shoot you, Bartowski.

[ It's only Bartowski when he's pouting. ]

I'm not sure you can do that through the screen.

If I saw you, it wasn't because of kittens. Just official things.

[ Carolyn stop grinning you'll scare the children. ]
