[ The screen flickers, and a girl of about 11 with long brown hair and eyes that seem to stare right into the heart of you appear. Despite the communication device visual, it's apparent she's a little different then most little girls. Maybe it's the way she bridges her fingertips, or how she purses her lips before speaking. ]

All of this communication babbling has to stop. You're doing nothing by clouding the waves.

[ She extends three fingers ]

We're all here against our will, as far as I know. [ Two fingers remain ]

The conclusion is that it's something other than us. [One finger ] And we're certainly from different places, if my talk with Elizaveta is anything to go by. There's no crew. Just us and our uniforms that are strangely accurate in size.

So here's the open ended question, folks: Who are we trusting enough to lead us for the time being?

[Then the video feed starts up so she can see him, a ribika with dark hair and deep blue eyes. His pupils are drawn to slits against the bright light coming from the device's screen, so even if his ears weren't visible it would still be clear that he's not entirely human.]

Now?

[ Chase may be hyper-intelligent and in the body of an 11 year old, but she's still 4. And that? That is a goddamn cat. An adorable, adorable cat. ]

You...

You have ears.

I do.

[he reaches up to give one of them a tweak, as if to prove it's real. This reaction is something he's used to by now.]

That's..

[ For the first time in her life, Chase is unable to find the correct word, before settling on this one: ]

Adorable.

Is it?

[He tilts his head a little, trying to think that over. No one's ever ventured to just outright call him adorable before. But his smile reveals he appreciates the sentiment either way.]

Why do you have them? [ Curious child is curious. ]

Because I use them to hear? [They twitch a little.] I've always had them.

I mean, [ What? She's curious. ] you're not human, then?

[A slight shake of the head.] No. I'm a ribika.

[ The next question is obvious. ]

They don't have any where I'm from. What is it?

It's a...well... [How to answer something like that? He lifts his hair to reveal his lack of human ears, then brings the tip of his black tail into view. The most that can be gleaned from that, then, is that they're a humanoid race with feline features.]

[ Let's pause a moment while Chase tries not to squeal out loud. ADORABLE. ]

You have a tail, too.

All ribika have tails. [He offers her a smile.]

What's your name?

Chase. I'm Chase, and you are?

[ Ribika. Yes, yes she likes Ribika. A LOT. ]

I'm Asato.

[Little girls thinking he's neat; that's not so bad.]

Well, Asato. If I find anything out I'll let you know.

[ And, in a smaller voice, unsure of herself: ] If we meet, can I touch your ears?

Thank you, Chase.

[He nods. How could he say no to a little girl like that?]

But be gentle, please.
