Even if malicious, it probably doesn't want to simply kill everyone aboard the ship -- it could have remained quiet during the outbreak of the illness to accomplish that. It seems to have its own agenda, and toying with the people aboard the ship is only a part of that plan?

I agree. It wants to play games, it wants attention. It spills riddles but I am uncertain it wants to be figured out. Perhaps it has not figured out itself yet, even.

Not any more than is known in general, I'm afraid. There's been talk of it having locked people into rooms with skeletons in the past, other acts of that sort. Frightening, but not directly harmful.
