[ Aragorn doesn't post often (actually, he tends to not post at all), but now he's talking on the network. It's only voice, and it's a soft, quiet one. Contemplative, if not for the steel hiding underneath it. ]

Near-thousand years ago, it was the time of the Kings. They ruled well, and in times of war, they gave their citizens many gifts. Their spirits must be kept, the Kings will say, and the soldiers must find reasons to return home. While the taxes rise to pay for armour and swords, the minstrels are well-paid to sing of the glories of war, and the victorious dead decorated well with honours.

[ A beat. ]

Now Tranquility takes the life of one of us, but some others have received bounty plenty. In items; in friends brought from home. [ Another pause. ]

Aha, it must be nice, having someone you're familiar with in this place! [ there's just the teeniest, tiniest, faintest trace of longing in the way he says that, though. ] I suppose it really does seem as if the ship is attempting to buy some people's affections.

Haa ... [ a long, quiet moment while he thinks about that. and then, slowly: ] Though -- it doesn't seem right to think that receiving such things would be the norm, yes? The gifts should be seen as just that, I think -- gifts. So people who don't receive them shouldn't be upset.

There is little 'should' in human emotion, however.

Mm, true. Then perhaps 'hope' would be a better word? One would 'hope' there isn't any conflict over these gifts and such.

Aragorn closes his eyes. ]

'Tis a hope hard-fought for. [ A beat. ] Perhaps I have already erred in the speaking of it.

[ ah, this conversation's turning gloomy again. pause, before he ventures optimistically, ]

I think things will turn out alright, though. It looks like most people have pulled through all the troubles so far -- and many here seem strong. It would be a good thing to trust everyone here, no?

[ Definitely like Merry and Pippin meshed together and grown into Man-size.

He chuckles. ]

You take much care to smile even in times of adversity.

[ it's good to see strider a little less serious, and soysauce laughs sheepishly. ]

Aha, I don't believe sulking and being gloomy ever accomplish much. It's easier to find the strength to keep going when one looks at the bright side of things, no?

For many, to look so is more difficult than the battle itself.
