Most departments will want you to have an associates or bachelor degree in criminal justice or a similar field. There's also an exam you have to pass. Officers tend to be involved with more of the protocol surrounding crimes, securing crime scenes and that kind of thing.

Detectives are typically the ones that run the primary investigation for a case.

I didn't know you could train a dog for such things. In my world, we use them as companions in battle.
