[ For all that Emma tries not to brood, she missed space Christmas and news of Pan's curse has her feeling particularly sentimental. Reflective, even. And the prospect of losing her memories, losing her loved ones, only serves to remind her that sooner or later, they're all trying, in some capacity, to lose the people they've grown to care about aboard the Tranquility. ]

A friend of mine pointed out a while back that not everyone has a home to go back to at this point. Or one worse than what's here, whether that means they're dead or just some other kind of screwed.

[ Strangely, with Dean back now, she has to wonder if he'd say the same again. That staying on the ship, even as it is now, is better than the alternative for some. Getting a read on him is tougher now. It feels like she's missing pieces. ]

What about you? What's your best case scenario for whenever we figure out what the hell's going on here? Do you go home, forget all about it? Backtrack to Arima and set up shop?

There's nothing for me back where I'm from.

[Which, really, can't be called home. Fortescue has her family home, unless the bank's seized it, but can't go back to it without being black-bagged by her own government. And the only guy who might be missing her is just better off without her, really. Cash deserves better.]

Where's Arima?

I'd take nothing over this nightmare.

It was a mining colony turned black market that we stopped off at during jump 30.

Mind you, when I say nothing, unpleasant somethings are also involved.
Not really sure which is better, here or there.

Not the kind of people you'd want to meet. Pirates and thieves, mainly.

We must be in a really charming quadrant of space.
I can't say I haven't dealt with those things before.

Then you know firsthand why Arima wasn't a great vacation spot.

Was it better or worse than this ship when it throws voices at us?
Or whatever its flavor of the month is?

Depends on your priorities.
Cutthroat and hard to survive in because you've got knives at your back and no idea where your next meal's coming from. But at least the paranoia won't drive you crazy.

That's a heck of a choice.
Perhaps once we figure this thing out, we won't have to be paranoid anymore.
Not that I'm really holding my breath.

That's the thing about paranoia. It sticks with you, even after it's not necessary.

Honestly? I'm a little out of my wheelhouse.

Understandable. It's certainly not mine, either. Going to other universes is a lot easier to figure out than this ship.
Which is odd, really.

Yeah, well. I guess magic and science don't really mix.

[blackmagus]

They do where I come from, but that's because science evolved alongside magic. And partly from it, I suppose.
But they do seem quite separate, elsewhere.
