Now that it seems the halls are no longer full of sleepwalkers engaging in bloodsport... it seems like many of the people who have joined departments had occupations or skills from home that made one a natural fit over the others. Did anyone pick up something entirely from scratch?

Ah. So did you come from money, or were you self-made?

I've made some good investments, in my time. I find land tends to last. Longer than most things.

Generally true. [ Provided it doesn't get overrun and tainted by Darkspawn, anyway. ] Not much of that to go around here either.

No. Though it was mainly a means to an end. I can't say I was particularly attached.

May I ask why you went freelance? Or do you prefer not to discuss it?

Best not to get attached to land, I think. It only leads to hurt feelings when you have to leave it behind.

I don't mind. The death of the king prematurely ended my career. I left my country behind and made my own way instead.

Ah, mortality. A serious drawback of kings. You felt no loyalty to stay for his successor?

He had no heir. The man who meant to succeed him was the reason he and my fellows died. Loyalty must be earned.

A civil war or more of a coup?

A coup, to be sure. When the signal was sent up, the usurper withdrew his troops, rather than join the fray. A king slaughtered by monsters looks like just a tragic accident, rather than treason.

Subtle, if not terribly original. How did it become clear to you that it wasn't an accident?

I was there. The call went up, and the expected help simply left the field of battle. It was a calm, organized retreat. We were betrayed by design, not by cowardice.

That suggests confidence of his grip. Trusting that the survivors wouldn't be believed, or that it wouldn't matter if they were.
