I have heard then in some lands they say there are white lies as opposed to those of the darker sort.

I can speak only from experience. But the darkest I have heard is that my brothers were gone and the whole knew not where.

( she knows what this is about, and rubs a hand across her forehead. )

Perhaps it is good that you can be angry when I cannot. Or the pain has numbed me. Am I weak, to yet feel as I do?

I know not. But please, despite your anger, look in on him. I would.. I would know he is doing as well he might be.

There really isn't any difference, despite waht people might say. Lying is lying.
But a white lie is something someone tells that's supposed to be a "harmless" lie
usually to try and protect someone's feelings

People don't usually expect lies to be found out. And yeah. It's kind of more hurtful. Some things you'd rather just know.

I have never heard even a whisper of such a burden pass from his lips. ( perhaps it is the fact that he is not a cardinal any longer. but that, in all honesty is absolutely none of her business to tell. even is she cannot understand why he would keep mum about such a thing.

no, it must be somewhat else. and she isn't certain if she has the stomach to even contemplate what that might be. seeing what this one revelation has done to her. )

The few whom I have confided in have urged me to do the same; beg on his knees for forgiveness. I believe I shall heed both their counsel and your example.

There's such a thing as being too honest, and nobody ever shares their full and unfiltered opinions about absolutely everything, absolutely all of the time. Sometimes you're gentle with people because it's what they need in that moment. Those times when being honest would be for your personal satisfaction and serve no purpose other than to belittle someone else.

[Cesare is smiling. He hasn't quite twigged that he's in trouble just yet.]

Why are you speaking of lies, Sis?

yeah, people make good use of white lies where i'm from.

they're basically supposed to be harmless lies, usually because telling the truth might be awkward.

Civilization is built on white lies. Can you really imagine a society where people didn't know how to tell an appropriate fib? It would be anarchy. Chaos.

My good friend Thomas Jefferson said, “He who permits himself to tell a lie once, finds it much easier to do it a second and a third time till at length it becomes habitual.” There is no harmless lie.

ok so think of it this way:

a white lie would be like going shopping and not telling your best friend because you know she doesn't have the money to spend, so you not inviting her saves her money and feeling sad about saying no

a worse lie is like, telling someone you're studying and you can't hang out with them, but actually you're going to a bar or something with someone else

basically white lies are supposed to keep people's feelings from getting hurt

you dig?

It seems to be that a white lie is one made to keep another from harm. No malice in it, or so people tell me.
