I've spent my whole life in exodus. It's as if my life is split into chapters, and each one ends with having to flee the place I'd been calling home. Being stuck somewhere isn't something I'm accustomed to.

[ Which brings us to the point: ] How do you all stand it? I'm discovering that I'm terrible at keeping busy without wilderness to go tromping through, noble children to drag home, or a city guard to assist. Does anyone need anything fetched? I might actually be desperate enough to play messenger and courier for someone. I can only do target practice so much before even that gets dull.

Had about one hour of freedom. That was nice.

The gardens are a good place to work. It's the most like outdoors and the work is needed. If I can't find a way out myself, I can make sure people survive until we do.

I'm certain that hour was wonderful. That it didn't last longer is terrible.

Your sentiment is admirable. I'm not sure I'd manage to keep that sort of outlook if I were in your situation.

Where were you trapped?

A place called Aperture Science. I woke up there without any memory of how I got there or anything else really and it turned out I got to be a test subject.

That's horrible. What in the world were you meant to be testing?

portal device. You use it to open linked portals on certain surfaces. I was using it to solve test chambers for an A.I that was running the place.

[ Hawke's witnessed teleportation. The concept of a magical (scientific?) portal that can usher a person from place to place makes sense. It's something else she gets caught up on. ]

What is an A.I?

It's a machine that has a personality and intelligence and can think for themselves. I didn't remember anything before I met one so from what I've met of people, A.I are similar but with less mobility and more metal.
