I've spent my whole life in exodus. It's as if my life is split into chapters, and each one ends with having to flee the place I'd been calling home. Being stuck somewhere isn't something I'm accustomed to.

[ Which brings us to the point: ] How do you all stand it? I'm discovering that I'm terrible at keeping busy without wilderness to go tromping through, noble children to drag home, or a city guard to assist. Does anyone need anything fetched? I might actually be desperate enough to play messenger and courier for someone. I can only do target practice so much before even that gets dull.

[ There's a heavy sigh. Hawke doesn't like this one bit. ]

Which reminds me, I don't suppose there's anyone around here who knows how to make arrows?

Kind of is better than I can manage. I've only ever purchased them. I can maintain my weapon, and I know what materials are required to make one, but I've never had to fashion one myself.

It might be a little harder here, I don't have the stuff I do at home. But I can try?

[ She thinks Allison sounds young for that, but that doesn't mean anything, really. ]

A mercen--no. I'm not. [ She sounds a little sheepish about that? ] I, um. Hunt sometimes. But I'm not a mercenary.

[ That's an interesting reaction. But not one Hawke intends to push right this minute. ]

Sport is as good a reason as any to take up the skill.

My parents thought it'd be a better one for me to learn. Gymnastics, too, I guess they wanted me to be more active when I was younger.

Tumbling is useful! Your parents seemed to have the right idea. Archery seemed the most practical skill for me to learn in order to make myself useful as a child inclined toward running around in the wilderness. At least then I could come home with dinner in addition to my torn and dirty clothes.

[ Allison laughs, but it's not mocking. ] I think they just wanted me to have a practical skill. They didn't really think that art or poetry was worth it.

[ Well, that's different. ] Many parents don't, sadly. The world does have a place for artists and poets. Anything in particular that you favored?

Photography, I think. But the only thing I was really good at was archery.

[ That may have just been a small gasp of delight. But Hawke will never admit to it. ] Photography? That's remarkable!

[ And something she'd only just discovered when someone sat her down and showed her how to use the functions of her device. She may or may not have dozens of stupid photos saved of the most inconsequential things. Novelty. ]

Someone told me all you need to do in photography is point and shoot. That suggestion seems to work as well as it does when applied to archery. [ That is, the end result is useless and rife with inaccuracy. ] It's much more nuanced than that, I think.

Way more nuanced. [ The grin is evident in her voice. ] I'm better at archery than I am photography, anyway. I never did place in any photography competitions, but I won a few archery ones.

I like you already, Allison! We'll have to practice together sometime. Provided I haven't broken all my remaining arrows before an opportunity presents itself.

If you do, I can try to fix them? [ A small pause. ] A practice partner would be nice. I'd like that.
