Does there exist documentation or any record concerning the use or effects of magic on the ship? I am interested in notation on repeated instances of magic during menial or daily activities as well as during times of flux as has recently passed, irrelevant to 'type' or origin of said magic.

I have perused the informational guide as well as backread through the network but this technology is not in use where I am from; I am unsure if I have missed anything due to unfamiliarity with the interface.

In your use, you've experienced no limitations except when attempting to meddle with the ship itself?

[Gold really hates text, and doesn't pause in whatever he's doing to read - he'd found the text-to-voice function a while ago, thankfully.]

That, and some minor struggles in dealing with matters that could be considered part of our general experiences here. [A pause, looking over at the camera for a moment.] I've found I can't heal others as well as I'm usually capable of.

Is it an across the board difference or does it vary dependent on what you're trying to heal?

It seems to be limited by what should be left to heal naturally. A more severe injury is receptive to having weeks of time taken off recovery, but will grow stubborn the lighter it becomes. Scratches or bruises wouldn't even be worth an attempt.

That is odd. I was able to heal my own superficial wounds not long ago, though it is a basic skill; I would not be considered a healer, just someone who happens to know certain methods.

Well, I wouldn't have called it my speciality - only, it seems, one of the more regularly called upon tasks on this vessel. Which is what has led me to believe that whatever's holding us here would simply prefer that general suffering wasn't alleviated too easily. Just as it would rather we stayed out of locked rooms.

Attempting to knock everyone down to equal footing does appear to be a running theme.

I suppose some sort of general mediation of our interactions is one way to view it. If that is the purpose, though, I can't say it's been entirely successful.

Indeed, nothing short of a complete suppression of all 'abilities' would manage such a thing properly. Perhaps it's incapable.

Do you mean something specific?

Only that these walls and the matter of healing have been the only limitations I've encountered. And I've seen enough of the abilities of others to know we could not be considered equal.

[He keeps it deliberately ambiguous, not interested, just yet, in revealing the extent of his own power.]

All in all it seems more about containment than good behaviour amongst ourselves.

[ .. is awfully benign for the course of this conversation and in response to the look this man is giving him ('him', anyway, as there's no return video feed, just his scroll of text). Severus is free to scrutinize without subjecting himself to scrutiny in response. ]

That isn't a no.

[There's something a touch brighter in his eyes and the curve of his mouth as he says it, a spark of some old impish glee in games of words.]

Caution would be wise while walking on a minefield, yes.

If there's any backlash to be experienced, it's notably delayed.

[Not that he's denying there's a possible downside to drawing too much attention to yourself - he's dealt with enough of the more longterm residents to know that.]

Of course, the best way to approach a minefield is to find some way to test for mines. From a safe distance.

Partly what inspired this fishing expedition.

Landing anything useful may take a little more tenacity.

[He's been here for a while, understands the pervasive atmosphere of paranoia - but there were ways to navigate that.]

Not quite the same avenues you're pursuing, but people here can be remarkably reluctant with any information they might be holding.

There's sense to it. [ Even if it's really not helping his research attempts, he can't fault people for not being forthcoming. (Being idiots is another matter.) ] Fortunately, universal cooperation is not required to look into things.

True, but even a little cooperation can open a lot of doors. The trick is in coaxing it out.

You're quite sold on the idea.

It's hard to see any downside in the accumulation of information. Unless you happen to subscribe to the belief of knowledge being dangerous.

Quite obviously I meant your enthusiasm about coddling and charming it out of people, seeing as I made this post to begin with.
