[ for optimal viewing pleasure, please see the following and allow to run in the background as you enjoy this recording. though the only thing currently in the feed is an angled shot of the treetops in the gardens, this is not an accidental video. there's rustling in the background, like something's moving fast through the leaves coming closer, and it is moving.

a couple seconds later, myfanwy comes flying overhead, a small black shape on her back. it might not be terribly difficult to discern what it is, but don't worry if you miss it, because the pteranodon makes a screech and a sharp turn, sending the shape tumbling off her back towards the device.

river rolls over the feed when she hits the ground, dressed in her tq crew uniform with the legs cut into shorts, hair tied up in a messy bun and hands covered with fingerless black gloves that hardly fit her at all. sky-diving experts or anyone with military training might notice her roll is perfectly controlled to minimise damage, and when she comes back into view, her eyes are wide with adrenaline but she doesn't seem particularly bothered by her fall. ]

Test five. Flight successful. Notes: need to meet higher altitude, consider construction of a harness; ask permission first. No hard turns.

[ she looks away for a second and blinks. ]

I skinned my knees.

[ oops? that's all she says before cutting off the feed. a second later, she attaches a text message. ]

[ oh my god but no, bran, you just had a really great idea. river's eyes widen a mile and she looks off into the trees, undoubtedly wondering where the pteranodon might've got off to. ]

[He repeats the name back to her, carefully--but he did not miss that look in her eyes.]

She wouldn't like to be painted, I think. Would she mind?

[ because when she says to ask permission, she means myfanwy's, not ianto's. how cool would she look with racing stripes? ]

[Well yes obviously Myfanwy's permission. Bran would think of nothing else but her permission--and though he feels a little hesitant, to think of painting a creature--it would be something to see...]

How would you know her answer?

[ she looks back then, eyes bright and earnest. ]

You know. You can see it, in the eyes.

[He glances away--but really he is looking to Summer, studying the direwolf's eyes. There are other ways to know, he thinks, but does not say.]

You're right. Then have you asked? Will she permit it?

I'll ask later. She did good today, give her treats and let her rest. And you're here now.

[ she will hang out with her starkbros. ]

But not really there. I could be, though-- Summer and I both. It was a very good flight. You must tell me next time you fly, and I will come and watch. And you must tell me what her answer is, too, if she will let you paint her.

What sort of treats does she eat?

She's got a sweet beak. Bitter, too. The dark is hers.

If I brought more chocolate to her, perhaps she would be pleased enough that she would not mind being painted. I will find some in the kitchens if I look, I am sure, and then I will come to the gardens.

Should I come first to the gardens, or should I first bring some chocolate to show that we will return with more?

Both. I have some for now. She's going to get spoiled.

She can be a little spoiled, I think. If it makes her happy. And she is going to let us paint her, she must be very happy indeed, to keep so still. We ask a lot of her.

[ she pauses, because that is something of a foreign concept. ]

Chocolate releases endorphins in the brain that generate the feeling of elation. Makes her happy. But there are others too. We could look for one?

En-dor-fins.

[He repeats the word slowly, thoughtfully. Such a thing is unheard of.]

What else will release such-- end or fins in her? Will other sweets work the same?

[ she smiles as he struggles; it's a big word, and it's not one of his. ]

Endorphins. Noun. Peptides released in the brain and vertebrates during physical activity, excitement, pain, and love. Things you enjoy and things that hurt. Don't want to hurt her though, so we'll have to find other things she enjoys.

[He repeats the word once more, with more confidence this time.]

Things that you love and enjoy are always a better help. [Men can be made to do things if they are hurt, but his father always told them that loyalty and love were a better motivation. A king's subjects should love him, and do what they do out of that love. It is the same here, as it is with all beasts.] She will learn to love the colors, too. All ladies like colors, and she is as noble as any lady--the Lady Myfanwy.

[ he gets it. bran always gets it and she loves him a little bit for that. ]

The Lady Myfanwy. With the Lady of Rivers and the little Lord of Winterfell. We'll paint each other in gold.

[That makes him laugh.]

We can't paint ourselves!

There is no war paint that is head to toe.

[BUT THERE COULD BE and he sort of likes the idea...]

Who are we warring with?

[ now you're getting it! there are obvious answers to his question, though: the monsters in the closet and under the bed, the ones that roam the hallways and cry in the night. there's too many to choose from. so she goes with one that encompasses them all: ]

The Black.

[There's a brief second of surprise at that. Another answer might have been more elaborate, like the troops they used to war with at Winterfell, snow-soldiers to destroy with packed handfuls of snow. But that was pretend. On this ship, it must be different. No matter how fun the game and how bright the paint, there are things to fight. He knows. You can feel them, sometimes.]

The Black. [He repeats her words; it's an agreement.] Do you have weapons?

[ something almost proud glows dim in her smile. imagination and belief are what makes a child's innocence, but they are always so much more aware than anyone realises. ]

Yes. We eat the dark and share the light, and paint each other gold.
