Hullo again, I'd been talking to someone else about this and I was just wondering if anyone here has a family or personal motto that they like to live by. Or, I suppose, that they really don't agree with.

If so, do you like yours? Do you find that it's helpful?

If not, did you want one? What would you make it?

The gens Claudia has no motto, if I understand you right. But there is an old ballad which says that the Claudian tree bears two kinds of fruit, the sweet and the sour, and the sour outnumber the sweet. I suppose they are not so much words for the Claudii to live by as a warning to any who have much to do with us, though I have of course had a great deal of trouble with my own family and can attest to the accuracy of the saying.

I have never thought of adopting a saying by which to live. It is an interesting question. But my life has been so crowded with prophecies that I would not know how to fit a phrase meant just for myself in amongst them all.

I know the saying that 'God gave us relatives and I thank God for letting us choose our friends'. Which isn't identical, but it sounds like it might apply here.

Prophecies are always the worst. Too vague to know what they mean until after they happen.

I don't have a particular motto. It's different from a personal code.

[Harry isn't about to call someone out for being presumptuous enough to use the motto of the royal family, but he is surprised and it shows.]

Never thought about it before, really. Growing up, me and Mum, we never had anything like a motto. If we had, it'd probably have been something like...oh, I dunno. Be happy with what you've got?

[She frowns. That's an awful motto, but one her mom used on her quite a few times.]

That's not necessarily a bad thing and I think, that if times are tough, it'd be a good thing to hold on to.
