-- Hi. [ she's still so not used to using this thing.. ] So I have noticed there are a fair amount of passengers offering different services for trade as of late, and seeing as I've been really meaning to offer for some time now- [ especially after they were boarded by pirates, but she doesn't want to mention it since it's obviously a sensitive subject. ]

First thing, in the simplest terms, I'm a witch. In my world, magic is very real, and while only a small number of the world's population has magic in their blood, it's very powerful, and rather useful. I'm still only a student of magic, but there are certain spells I can cast that I feel could be used here for any number of things, so.. right now, I would like to offer my assistance with protection spells. They're used to guard things as small as a deck of cards, to a whole room, if you'd like. They're non-lethal, more like a barrier than anything else, but strong against most disruptions, and they can be layered with different types of wards. I'm not limited to protection spells, but considering recent events.. I thought some of you might like the comfort of knowing your things are a little better guarded. I can't promise they'll work long-term, because magic is a little different here than it is at home, but I'd be willing to refresh the charms as needed.

As I said, there are actually spells for a wide range of normal, everyday needs, so the trade is up for negotiation. Which sounds so formal, Godric. [ her nose scrunches up a little bit, but then she waves it off ] I just mean I'm willing to use different spells to help you with whatever you need.

If you have any interest in that sort of thing, I was actually hoping to trade it for a few lessons in how to better use these communicators, and some of the other technology found around the ship. I can't use magic to protect the conversations on here, for instance, and I'd like to learn how to do that. The wizarding world is very, very far behind on technological advances in the world- [ plus she's from the 1970s... ] -so I would be extremely grateful to anyone that would be willing to help me fill in the gaps there, so to speak. Thank you!

Do your protective barriers also protect against you?

Even if they don't work in the long term, do you think they would still work if you weren't here?

Technically, no. I could remove the spell at any time, though I'm not sure why I would find reason to do so.. Though they would hold up just the same, even if I were to leave the ship. There are spells that were cast hundreds of years ago, in my world, that are still just as unbreakable as they were when they were first cast. And there are spells that are linked to the witch that cast them, in some way, but they don't have to be.

But as long as it was still "up," it would also work against you?

Can it be specified? For example, if I was primarily interested in specific people being unable to gain access to an item.

Yes. It usually works the other way around; a spell recognizes who does have access to the place or object. Think of it like... only telling a few people a secret, instead of informing an entire group of people of said secret except one. Though I'm sure there are ways to reverse that, I would just have to try a few different things.

That's interesting.

The usual way would probably work just as well for what I might have in mind.

There are spells for just about anything and everything you can think of. The only exceptions are: I cannot produce an object out of nothing, I can't bring animate things or people back to life, and I can't replicate money, or food.

How do you mean, exactly?

You were talking about protective spells. Would it be possible, in theory, to apply other kinds of spells to items? To change their appearance, or give them specific properties? Or to detect whether or not someone else had already done something like that?

There's Transfiguration, that can chance the appearance of an object. Properties.. That's difficult. It depends on what it is, what you would like it to do, what's already been done to it. Which I can check, with a couple different spells, but I don't know if my magic is the same as the magic that could be on the item. Magic works differently in different worlds.

The reason I was curious is that there was an item in my world that couldn't be completely explained, and was causing some trouble. Typically, we don't have magic, only tricks.

Are there any magical methods of destroying items that might be effective, if it came down to it?

[Magic? Q will believe that when he sees it, though a call for help in technology? Who could resist? It takes a lot of effort for him not to boast his true qualifications.]

Is the item here? There are quite a few spells that can be used to break things down. We can't make things simply vanish into thin air ( I believe it's the same as the theory of mass, Muggle science - matter cannot be created nor destroyed completely ) but there are curses that cause things to shrink, liquify, explode, catch fire.

Oh, sure, that's alright. [ nodnodnod ] Mm, it's a mix of both, in a way. The ability to perform magic is in your blood, you're born with it. It's not something you can teach yourself. Though most witches and wizards go to school to learn how to properly control that magic. There are different subjects we learn - Potions, Charms, Defense - but none of it would be possible to perform if you didn't have magic in you.

If nothing else, it should be combustible. It would be better to be able to see evidence that it had been destroyed. Is it possible that there might be magical ways of testing it, to see how it might have been created? Regular scientific analysis was inconclusive. It's likely that some kind of magical creature was involved in its creation.

[He knows exactly what kind, but that's also knowledge he'd prefer to keep to himself for now.]

It could be a trick. Or they're laying low in preparation for a trick, certainly. Normally I would suspect that this is merely the calm before the storm, but it's been a few days. [ hn ] I'm a worrier though, any one of them will tell you that.
