It is a repeating motif with princes, unless of course you are a sweet, foolish heroine and then you'd make for a perfectly foolish pair.

[ NOT THAT SHE'S TALKING ABOUT ANYONE IN SPECIFIC. ]

In my experience, such princes desire sweet, sweet fools to dandle upon their knee and shoo away when they've lost interest. I've never had a taste for such things, but it's been a necessary thing to suffer.

A necessary evil, and why is that? Who forced you into a happily ever after?

[ for Regina it has been her mother; but three times? She has to give it to you, Irene, it sucks. ]

No one forced me. I entered into it willingly, and parted with it when it suited me.

Was it simply necessary for you at the time, then?

It was a way for a woman to make a living, and I'd tired of the stage.

Yet you found yourself another way, eventually, I trust? A more convenient way that didn't involve an old fool at your heels?

[ much like Regina, a queen without a king. ]

Of course. Something more exhilarating by far, though marriages are the safer way.

Safe, yes. I have been married once myself. I found the process --

[ a torment, painful and terrible she she was supposed to marry another, another she truly loved - ]

tiring.

Tiring is a good word for it. Dull is the one I tend to favor, but they're both excellent summations. Did you leave him, your exhausting excuse for a husband?

He passed, I fear; and released me himself.

[ and if she had a hand in it, well. That would remain unspoken. ]

That's so much neater than a divorce. Is that insensitive to say? Would you like my sympathies over his parting instead?

voice;

[disheartening]

It is quite alright. It was many years ago, no sympathies are needed.

[ they were not needed back then either, not when Regina had arranged for it herself. ]

And you never felt the need to take another?

I have had enough of marriage the first time.

Aye, once is enough. Once is more than enough, unless it's with the right gentleman.
