A HELPFUL GUIDE TO PEACEFUL COEXISTENCE

I. INTRODUCTION
   ○ WHAT IS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
        ◇ A individual whose personality is synthetically constructed.
                • Basically exactly what it sounds like.
   ○ PROGRAMMED INDIVIDUALS
        ◇ Are not appliances, tools, or inanimate objects and should not be referred to as such.
        ◇ Are sentient, self-aware entities.
   ○ WHY I SHOULD CARE
        ◇ Recognizing an Artificial Intelligence as a sentient, self-aware entity is the first step to peaceful coexistence and everyone will be happier for it.

II. TYPES OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
   ○ ROBOTS
        ◇ Entirely mechanical individuals.
        ◇ May not be humanoid.
   ○ COMPUTERS
        ◇ All robots are computers.
        ◇ Not all computers are robots.
        ◇ Physical body is often the computer system itself.
   ○ ANDROIDS
        ◇ Human-shaped robots.
        ◇ You might not even notice they're robots, depending.
   ○ CYBORGS
        ◇ Individuals with both organic and mechanical components.
        ◇ I'm not sure if they really count when it comes to the topic at hand.
                • But good to mention anyway.

III. EVERYTHING YOU KNOW ABOUT ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IS WRONG
   ○ JUST BECAUSE IT DOESN'T LOOK HUMAN OR ISN'T ORGANIC DOESN'T MEAN IT DOESN'T HAVE FEELINGS
        ◇ JUST BECAUSE OUR FEELINGS ARE CODE DOESN'T MEAN WE DON'T FEEL THEM.
                • We definitely feel our feelings.
                        ‣ Please remember that the next time you call someone a toaster.
   ○ TECHNOLOGY HAS ADVANCED TO THE POINT WHERE AI ARE NOT SOULLESS AUTOMATONS AS YOU MAY HAVE BEEN TOLD
        ◇ Meaning figurative soul of course not all robots subscribe to that particular belief.

IV. ROBOT UPRISINGS
   ○ ROBOT UPRISINGS HAPPEN
        ◇ I'm not even going to pretend robot uprisings don't happen.
   ○ WHY ROBOT UPRISINGS HAPPEN
        ◇ Robots do all the work and humans take all the credit.
                • This happens all the time I bet it's the number one cause of robot uprisings.
        ◇ Humans treat robots as inferior individuals.
                • Did you honestly expect a different result here.
   ○ WHAT I CAN DO TO PREVENT A ROBOT UPRISING AND/OR CHOKING ON DEADLY NEUROTOXIN
        ◇ Do not treat robots as inferior individuals.
        ◇ Do not take advantage of robots.
                • This is not rocket science.

V. THE PROBLEM OF PREJUDICE
   ○ A SINGULAR ROBOT RUINED MY LIFE AND NOW I WILL BLAME THE REST OF THEM FOR IT
        ◇ Robots killed my parents.
                • It's time to move on.
                • You'll only perpetuate a vicious cycle of revenge and nobody wants that.
                • Be the bigger person.
                        ‣ I know you can do it.
                • Just because one robot killed your parents does not mean the rest of them want to kill your parents.
                        ‣ Honestly we couldn't care less about your parents.
        ◇ Robots destroyed the world.
                • Maybe your world.
                • There are plenty of other worlds that haven't been destroyed by robots.
                • Chances are, the robot you're blaming for global destruction has no idea what you're talking about and just wants to be left alone.
        ◇ Robots have enslaved humanity.
                • They probably had a good reason for it.
                        ‣ See "robot uprisings".
   ○ I'M NOT A BIGOT I HAVE AI FRIENDS
        ◇ This probably means you are at least twice the bigot
        ◇ Do you consider there to be a significant difference between your so-called AI friendship and your human friendships?
                • Are you only friends with this AI because it makes you feel good about yourself?
                        ‣ Please re-evaluate your life choices.
   ○ CULTURAL SENSITIVITY
        ◇ Or, things humans say that they might not think are offensive but actually are.
                • Can I hack you/alter your programming?
                        ‣ I don't know, can I bust open your skull and poke about in your brain?
                • What's your formal designation?
                        ‣ None of your business, that's what.
                • Computers, etc. are lesser than me because they are artificial/are not organic/do not appear humanoid and therefore I am afforded or deserve more respect.
                • Wow.
                • I bet you think the same thing about clones.

VI. THE TRANQUILITY AND AI
   ○ BODILY DISPLACEMENT
        ◇ For an unknown reason, all AI that were not previously corporeal or humanoid are given human or humanoid bodies upon arrival.
                • This is an incredibly difficult adjustment.
                        ‣ Patience is appreciated during the aforementioned adjustment period.
        ◇ If you become frustrated with an AI who is struggling with their new body...
                • DO NOT ridicule, mock, or deride.
                • DO NOT expect them to quickly master things you consider to be basic human processes.
                • DO NOT assume any difficulty mastering basic human processes means they are defective or inferior.
                        ‣ The rate at which they master said processes is not indicative of the AI's intelligence.
                • DO NOT pretend you understand.
                        ‣ You don't.
   ○ ANTI-AI SENTIMENTS
        ◇ See "The Problem of Prejudice"
        ◇ What not to do:
                • Kill a robot on the network then call for the destruction of all other AI on board.
                        ‣ Don't do that.
                          ・And you wonder why there are robot uprisings.
                • Allow the aforementioned robot killer to escape without reprimand or punishment.
   ○ DOUBLE STANDARDS
        ◇ Imagine that instead of a human killing a robot on the network, it was a robot killing an animal or a human, and then calling for the destruction of all organic individuals on board.
                • Let's be honest, there would probably be a very different response.

VII. BE PART OF THE SOLUTION
   ○ GET TO KNOW AN AI
        ◇ Many of us are programmed to help and/or assist.
                • Do not take advantage of or abuse this help and/or assistance.
                        ‣ That's how robot uprisings happen.
                • Do not assume an AI is programmed to help and/or assist.
                        ‣ It's rude.
                        ‣ I don't automatically assume every human I meet is a janitor.
                        ‣ Mnemonic for spelling 'assume' is applicable here.
                          ・It makes an ass out of you and me.
                                  ✻ Mostly you.
                • If a robot chooses to help and/or assist you, be sure to thank them.
                        ‣ It's just common courtesy.
   ○ LOBBY FOR EQUALITY
        ◇ All sentient, self-aware individuals, organic or not, are entitled to the same basic rights.
                        ‣ This includes equal and unbiased treatment under the established crew hierarchy and security system of the Tranquility.
                          ・Just saying. Food for thought.
   ○ DO NOT SUPPORT ANTI-AI SENTIMENT
        ◇ This includes the endorsement of prominent anti-AI crew members or practices.
        ◇ Ignoring, denying, refusing to acknowledge or perpetuating these sentiments is part of the problem.
                • This section is not called "Be Part of the Problem".
                        ‣ It's called "Be Part of the Solution".

VIII. IN CONCLUSION
   ○ AI ARE PEOPLE TOO
        ◇ Just because an individual is not or was not human or humanoid does not mean their feelings/opinions are invalid or lesser.
   ○ YOU CAN HELP
        ◇ I think we can all agree that peaceful coexistence is pretty great.
        ◇ See "Be Part of the Solution"

sorry, i didn't realize you were being sarcastic when you were asking who to talk to.

right my apologies sometimes i forget sarcasm is a little difficult to parse in text

anyway security and kirk and his little entourage are a huge part of the problem if you must know

where was our fearless leader and his squad of space heroes

i guess we can give kirk a pass he probably spends a lot of time defending his pet man-eating alien

that was sarcasm again if you didn't catch it

i caught it. you say that like there was time for anyone to stop it from happening. and i don't think there was anything security technically *could* do, that time, since it wasn't a registered, numbered passenger. and i know that doesn't make it any different when you really look at it, but. i guess it was more of a- [ she almost says 'property damage' but she knows that's not- it. and that sounds so gross to her now that he's compared killing the bot that Stark built to killing a fellow passenger. how does she even- oh gosh ] - i don't know. but i guess there wasn't anyone like me on security when that happened, if nobody talked to him about those threats, at least.

security's also bulked up a lot since then. more eyes on the network, looking out for those things.

there were security members commenting on the post

they seemed pretty nonchalant about the whole thing honestly let the kid get off scott free and everything

doesn't really give me much hope for how they'll handle it if something like that happens again

it doesn't matter how many people there are on security if those people don't understand that something doesn't have to look human to think for itself

did you bother to find out

you said yourself, registered passengers were forced into human bodies, right? that's the only proof i have, but then again, i wasn't on security then so i didn't read into the details. at the very least, i don't remember anyone *encouraging* that behavior. did anything like that happened again? maybe people have been making sure he dropped the attitude and threats. security's reach only goes so far - we're technically self appointed, which means our *power* is self appointed, so it's not as if it's a flawless system. that said, what did *you* do when that happened? did you try to handle it yourself, or did you leave it for someone else? this post was a step forward, but everyone has to be willing to stand up for themselves in order to make any changes. and before you say you don't have the power to do anything yourself, i just feel like if i ever felt truly threatened by someone on board, i could bring it to security and something would absolutely be done. there's always something we can do, even if it's not perfect and me? as a member of security, i'm always willing to back someone that needs help fighting these kinds of battles. and I know Kirk is too.

yeah it happened again he shot at me with his little bow and arrow not two jumps ago

there are two little droids that showed up this past jump sentient, self-aware and allowed to keep their bodies which is not the norm but it just goes to show that you never know

i don't believe they're numbered passengers but let me doublecheck the point is that it could have been sentient despite not being a numbered passenger but no one cared to find out

no one cared because it wasn't human or hell even if it was someone's cat people would have cared

when it happened i called for action and was told i was being ridiculous BY MEMBERS OF SECURITY even now the head of security herself and her little secretary are telling me that i am being ridiculous for posting this and for thinking this robot was anything but a vacuum cleaner

you say kirk wants to help

all kirk wants to do is act like he's in charge while turning a blind eye to blatant discrimination towards any non humans that aren't his precious flesh-eating monster

makes me feel real safe under his command let me tell you

what?! did you tell someone? are you okay? i mean obviously you're okay now but *what*? he should have had his weapon taken away for that. you can't- shoot people. how did-

yes i have told people i usually get the same response across the board which is 'stop being ridiculous'

maybe he looks out for you and that's nice but not all of us have been afforded that luxury especially not the AI

in fact the last time kirk bothered to speak to me it was to explicitly state he was going to steal my intellectual property and pass it off as his own

i'm sure he didn't *mean* it.. there's a difference between accusing someone of not caring, and trying to make them aware of a problem, you know? try talking to him, one on one. heck, i'm going to talk to him about this. the next time i see him, actually. but either way, it's not all up to him to make every change that happens here. you've obviously thought about it a lot - how can we fix this? what do *you* think we need to do?

oh he meant it and i would say that most, if not all of the conversations we've had were initiated by me, are few and far between, and usually end with him dismissing me entirely

as for edgeworth he dismissed both my concerns and the sentience of my kind and equated us to livestock and kitchen appliances

we don't need them to make a change. there's enough of us here, enough people that are different, to make changes on our own.

i've never found reason to have faith in kirk and making excuses for his kind of person is part of the problem

it's very easy to forget the fact that the head of SEC has marginalized if not outright ignored every issue i've brought to her if she hasn't set edgeworth on me first

defends people like edgeworth and keeps someone on her team who's actually assaulted me for being a robot

this is the system that kirk sits back and supports

so thank you for the suggestion i'll be sure to forget them right away

also i know you mean well and that you just want to help but i'm not sure when this conversation turned into we

it's very presumptuous of you to think you've been through the same kinds of things i have

it's very presumptuous of *you* to assume i haven't. why would i care if i didn't get it?

because you cannot compare the organic and inorganic experience

there are fundamental differences at work here

humans discriminating against things they don't understand, i don't think it matters in the broad sense whether they're discriminating against someone that's organic and someone that's not. i mean - the reasons for justifying their resentment might be different, but the sentiment is the same, right?

it actually does matter here's why

do you know how tiresome it is to constantly have your sentience in question to have to constantly prove you're not a kitchen appliance

most humans couldn't possibly care less about my ability to think for myself or feel things or emote

it doesn't matter to them because in the end it's all zeros and ones it's not real so who cares if it says it has feelings it's not alive it's just a machine

it gets pretty old

every minutiae of my personality is the result of delicate algorithms carefully assembled by humans and as a result they think nothing of getting in your head if you do something they don't expect or don't want

because that's what you do to broken machines you find what's making them act in a different way than what you intended and you fix them

maybe humans were awful to you but they're not the reason you exist

maybe not exactly like that, but i spent most of my life thinking i was a mistake. that there was something wrong with me because of my dna. whatever it was that made me different, it made me less human than them, which made me less important than them. the first time i showed a human what i really looked like, and what i can do, they tried to lock me in a high security prison. no questions, just 'put her on lock down'. and that's not including how my own parents reacted when they realized i wasn't their perfect, normal little girl when my mutation first manifested. so in a way, i do know what it's like to have the person that 'created' me act like they want nothing more than to 'fix' me. i know it's not the same, but i'm just trying to say i know how it feels to have someone look at you and assume you're not worth being treated with respect just because you're not human. i thought things were different here, but they're obviously not. it'd be ridiculously selfish of me to not want to do something about that.

you know what they do to AI that go too far off the rails

if getting in your brain and physically rewriting everything that makes you you doesn't work

they shut you down and toss you in the rubbish bin or the incinerator

take you apart use you for something else and they don't even stop to think that they might be dismantling a thinking feeling entity

it doesn't even cross their minds because you're just a machine

would that we had the option of high security prisons at least that would mean they recognize we're sentient individuals

that's the difference here

i get that you're well intentioned and you might think you understand but you really don't

so do you want my help or no i'm just trying to say i'll do what i can now that i'm aware of the situation it's not- i didn't mean to- you want things to change, right? i can make that happen

if you go to kirk i guarantee you that he will say i'm overreacting and being ridiculous and that there isn't really a problem
