My name is Mattie Ross. I have discovered that there are quite a number of children here, and many do not seem to have parents or families to see to their proper education. So beginning this week, I am inviting any children who would like to join me to attend religious service on Sunday - Seventh Day - morning before the regular service, and on Third Day evening as well. We will meet in the Oxygen Gardens, and Third Day meeting will be followed by lessons in reading, arithmetic, and common skills. I will teach hymns and psalms to anyone who wishes to learn.

I think we shall tell stories as well.

Please bring books if you have them.

Bran Stark, I hope you will come as we discussed and share your hymns and stories as well.

[ but this isn't the same at all. so she will take a moment and a breath and not judge. and she has a point - somebody should be teaching all the kids who are showing up, and it's a disgrace that it took a kid to think of it. ]

[ Mattie just purses her lips a little at the unintentional remark. Since it is obviously not unkindly meant, however, she overlooks it. ]

What would you propose to teach?

[ Not that she feel averse to accepting help, only that she wants to be sure the presence of adults is not just to try and dictate what the children are doing. ]

Teach? Noooo. I mean, unless you really feel the need for a class in "whatever poem Heather can remember today". I thought more like... I dunno, you're gonna have a bunch of different age groups there, so it might be helpful to have someone around to make sure the little guys aren't sticking their pencils up their noses while you're handling the bigger stuff.

[ It's said a little sadly. Even though some of the ages are right, there's no-one on the ship child enough to do such a thing. Really, what she's thinking of are sudden outbursts of upset or anger; stuff that she remembers happening in school and must be a hundred times worse out here. ]

[ That possibility had not occurred to Mattie, being mostly used to only dealing with her brother and sister, or occasionally the recalcitrant drunken Marshal. ]

That would likely be a help. I think there may be one or two who will come to help teach, but I do not know how often, or how well they will do with handling children.

[ And although she keeps the thought to herself, she thinks it would be useful to have a grown woman around, to be a kind of mother figure for those who have none. ]
