While I understand that emergency protocols are presently enforced, should you possess the availability or inclination, Captain Ward has permitted our presence aboard the bridge.

[ oh, did that grab anyone's attention? he's sure hoping so. ]
With engineering devoted to stabilizing the Tranquility's reactor and shuttle bay awaiting potential E-Vac codes at the initiation of the jump drive- theoretically our best course of action would be to initiate manual override. At which point navigation could be re-routed and an attempt made to locate a suitable space station for the time necessary to make appropriate repairs.

[which is as much of a 'we need you' as Sulu is going to get, but Jim doesn't think it needs explanation. Sulu is their pilot, so he needs to be there.

Jim's been in and out of Engineering as time has allowed, and he's heading for the vents he'd last heard Sulu was is fifteen minutes after this broadcast goes up.]

[ if they ask, it's for a reason. sulu's not self-centered enough to think there's anything he can do that either of them haven't had training for, so it must be something else. ( an away team, they picked you for the away team )

by the time kirk gets there, sulu's disentangling himself from the vent, rolling out of it more gracefully than he has a right to. he's dirty and his fingers are stripped raw from plucking through wires and screws and he'd always figured his first away mission would be something a little more dignified but. ]

Captain. [ a cough, then a crooked smile. ] Kirk.

[ there's a pause, sulu thinking about how in the world he's going to lay the flight crew's grievances at his captain's feet. they all have enough to worry about. kirk has enough to worry about.

wiping the blood on his jumpsuit is a stall. a necessary one, but still. ]

[his mouth quirks, and after what's gone on in the last twenty four hours, it's nice to hear that from someone without an ounce of sarcasm. still, he can see the pause in Sulu's expression. a there's something going on that Kirk feels he's gotten pretty damn good at picking up on since he's been here.]

How's it look up there?

[ sulu raises a shoulder in a half-hearted shrug as he unstraps the belt of tools from his hips. ]

We're not finding anything. Or I'm not finding anything.

[ if they could just find the problem, it'd be less nerve-wracking. but groping around blind with the jump approaching and people running around like chickens with their heads cut off...things had the potential to deteriorate all too quickly. ]

[Jim only nods, because that's what he was expecting but not hoping to hear.]

I'll get in touch with Resnik. [and he glances up to the vent; it's been a while since he's climbed inside a jeffery's. his gaze comes back around to the pilot] How are you?

[ there's a pause and then sulu sighs, and that's the real answer. that sigh contains multitudes, all the things sulu doesn't say. it's exhaustion and frustration and stress all wrapped into one gesture, but when sulu finally decides on words, they don't encompass any of those things because that's not a burden kirk needs ot bear. ]

I'm holding together.

[the sigh is enough, it's heavy, instead of a release. like a burden instead of relief, and Jim reaches out, closes his hand over Sulu's shoulder and squeezes.]

Once all this is over we'll go have ourselves one hell of a joyride.

[Jim's mouth quirks at the edges. we'll get through this, we've had worse.]

[ sulu's fingers close around kirk's wrist. it's a comfort, it's meant to be a comfort and sulu holds tight for a minute, letting it anchor him. ]

[ he doesn't want to. this is his fault, it really is his fault more than kirk's, but-- ]

[he asks, and there's something wry in his expression as he nods, acknowledging what's to come. she'd been pretty damn worked up about what happened, which had been purely accidental on Kirk's part- but tensions were running high. he didn't hold it entirely against her.

he squeezes Sulu's shoulder one more time before letting go. now wasn't the time for the politics on the Tranquility. right now, he needed Sulu to be his pilot, and a Starfleet officer.]

Focus on the bridge.

[ there's a quick, sharp nod. that helps, in a way, that kirk has an idea of what sulu needs to say. but it doesn't negate the necessity of sulu saying, quick and blurted before kirk can cut him off-- ]

I'm sorry.

[ sorry that his department is pissed, sorry that sulu hadn't been as clear as he should be ( he's gotten lazy, gottne sloppy, in more ways than he wants to admit ) and that kirk had been left in the dark.

but there's an order in the next breath, one that's easy to follow, because sulu knows how to do that. sulu knows how to be starfleet through and through, and he's been kirk's man since the drill. this comes naturally. ]

I can do that, sir.

[he pauses when the I'm sorry hits the air, but Jim lets it go. he doesn't say Sulu doesn't have to apologize, just like he doesn't say it's okay. because the slip, as one of his officers, wasn't exactly okay-- but Jim understood. he nods again, and claps his lieutenant on the shoulder.]

I'm looking forward to hearing what you guys find out.

[and then he's looking up into the vent, glancing back to flash Sulu a toothy smile as he clasps the worker's belt on over his own regulation one.]

Don't do anything I wouldn't do.

[ it doesn't mean he's off the hook. sulu's aware of that. but it's something that can be set aside for now. until this is all taken care of, until they've been to the bridge and back and hopefully figured out a way to get this ship moving.

kirk grins and sulu grins back. easy. instinctive. ( fencing. ) ]

[Jim winks in response, then reaches up and, using just his arm strength, hoists himself up into the vent Sulu had recently vacated.

he could focus on this, now that he knew his team had it covered.]

...Ward gave me permission. [ which isn't exactly the most important question on the planet to be quite honest, but it's a question tony can't help but ask in a way. ]

I've got to tell my team and Pepper. Remind me after all of this to finally officially sign up for engineering, because this is bullshit. And me telling them, I'm going to remind you, in case you forgot, is not negotiable.

Can't say I'll necessarily obey the request, but sure, patch him through.

Hey. Security is busy so I need people I can trust to set up patrols in the empty passenger decks. Can you spare anyone?

Everyone but Banner, maybe.

I don't do orders. So, yeah, gonna leave it up to them, but I might be able to give you three. Clint off gunnery watching duty if he does it?

[It's about time someone recognized his skills. He'd be a little more thrilled if Ward copped to being in over his head, but authorized bridge access is nothing to sniff at.]

I believe, as the proverb is used- desperate times require desperate measures.

Would've said desperate times started ten months ago. Ghost ship running on half-busted systems, but one little engine hitch and he's letting you touch navigation.

I am inclined to agree. It is suspicious behavior from a Captain, to abandon the bridge in a time of crisis and follow the lead of an engineer.

[There's a pause. He knows what this is. Maybe there was permission somewhere, but the rest was opportunity. He shouldn't be surprised. Rule-breaker, he'd called Kirk on it the first time he'd met him (in the brig, locked up for his first visit to the bridge). Of course the rest of his crew would have traces of it too.]

Hard to predict, behaviour like that.

[He's not interested in another trip to the brig. Not over something he's predicting will be another bust. He might not have had much time to look at navigation, last time, but he doesn't expect to find much more on a return trip.]

Frequently. I admit, I had operated under the impression that Commanding officers were instruction upon how to maintain control of one's emotions and one's crew in times of duress. This has been- enlightening. [ on the opposite end of the feed, Spock's head inclines faintly, fingers drawn together in his lap. ]

However, if it is reassurance you desire, allow me to state once more that we will be present upon the bridge with permission, not as an act of violence, coercion, or mutiny.

[Riddick gives a small laugh, a huffed sound, at the idea of commanding officers instructed in anything like that. But Spock's universe wasn't like his, he'd figured that much already. He wonders how long Kirk and his crew would last, finding themselves back there. How long they're going to last here.]

[If Ward comes back from engineering and finds them accessing navigation when they shouldn't be.]

Just what are you suggesting here, Spock?

[Because 'Captain Ward has permitted our presence aboard the bridge' and 'Captain Ward has permitted us to re-route the course of the ship' are kind of two different ideas. And somehow, Jack thinks that if they'd gotten permission to do the second that Spock would have said so. Not that not having it would stop him. Just that he'd like to know ahead of time whether or not he could get into serious trouble for this]

I spoke to the head of shuttle bay and suggested that an attempt be made to circumvent the potential necessity for emergency evacuation, and was told I would not find assistance in her department.

I spoke to the head of security and suggested that additional personnel be posted within the corridors to ensure that further compromise of additional quarters would not occur in the absence of both crew and passengers, and was told such precaution would not be taken.

I am suggesting that we attempt to override jump drive and calculate a route that will permit adequate time and resources to serve the Tranquility's passengers in the absence of departmental assistance.
