[001] - VIDEO
[When Simon speaks, it's the kind of calm that masks a certain agitation--a placating tone that, despite its detached professionalism, somehow suggests he is maybe a little upset about being removed from home--from the familiar and (relatively) safe. He is, however, composed and collected, because it's probably a bad idea to address the network if he looks panicked.]
It's...my experience that there's always an absence of medical professionals in the places that need them the most. You wouldn't believe how many ships go off to the border planets without a doctor. We're lucky to have the facilities we do, all the way out here--
[Please hold for a SLIGHTLY BITTER laugh.]
I'm a trauma surgeon. I, uh. I'm the medic on board the Serenity. Which is...it's a ship like this, but...smaller. Much smaller. I'm used to living and working in space--I have experience, so I'd like to join the medical team, if I can. If there are positions open.
[And he's sure there are, because people always need doctors. The Alliance wants them alive, or he hopes they do. If he has something useful to offer who or whatever has brought him here, all the better for him.]
I hope that all this talk about killing each other doesn't actually become a reality, but in case there is a medical emergency, my number is zero-one-zero-zero-three-zero. Some of you may have met my sister, she--
[But he thinks better of elaborating and stops there.]
If anyone can send me an inventory of the medications stocked in the infirmary, I'd appreciate it.

I don't think licensure matters here. No malpractice coverage to speak of. I'm amazed the infirmary is stocked.
But it is. What are you looking for?
no subject
I'm looking for a few things--anti-psychotics, anti-anxiety medication...trying to find what's available and if it's comparable to what I have with me. Are you on the staff?
no subject
I'm a plastic surgeon, [and the hard line of her mouth just dares you to make a judgement on that], and if you're a trauma surgeon then you'll have some idea why my patients might need anti-psychotics and anti-anxiolytics.
[The kind of trauma that occasions a series of reconstructive surgeries is also going to leave its mark on the patient's psyche. Then there's coping with what you look like, and what people see.]
I might be able to help you. Would you prefer our discussion to be filtered? Encrypted.
[She's caught onto the computer system quickly, no surprise.]

UNEXPECTED
For a moment or two, Simon thinks that River is playing some kind of game with him, but this girl is noticeably older, and that's
really
weird.
SO he paaaaauses, and considers, and finally answers.]
I...could, but it's something that takes a very long time to learn, and I don't think we have the proper resources here.

Oh, another medical purrfessional! Hello and welcome aboard, sir!
Unfurtunately I... wouldn't take the death threats lightly. [ Her smile flickers, but quickly comes back. ] But I suppaws that's why doctors are all the more valuable here!
