[001] - VIDEO

[When Simon speaks, it's the kind of calm that masks a certain agitation--a placating tone that, despite its detached professionalism, somehow suggests he is maybe a little upset about being removed from home--from the familiar and (relatively) safe. He is, however, composed and collected, because it's probably a bad idea to address the network if he looks panicked.]

It's...my experience that there's always an absence of medical professionals in the places that need them the most. You wouldn't believe how many ships go off to the border planets without a doctor. We're lucky to have the facilities we do, all the way out here--

[Please hold for a SLIGHTLY BITTER laugh.]

I'm a trauma surgeon. I, uh. I'm the medic on board the Serenity. Which is...it's a ship like this, but...smaller. Much smaller. I'm used to living and working in space--I have experience, so I'd like to join the medical team, if I can. If there are positions open.

[And he's sure there are, because people always need doctors. The Alliance wants them alive, or he hopes they do. If he has something useful to offer who or whatever has brought him here, all the better for him.]

I hope that all this talk about killing each other doesn't actually become a reality, but in case there is a medical emergency, my number is zero-one-zero-zero-three-zero. Some of you may have met my sister, she--

[But he thinks better of elaborating and stops there.]

If anyone can send me an inventory of the medications stocked in the infirmary, I'd appreciate it.

[Amanda will see your slightly bitter laugh and raise you a slightly bitter smile.]

I don't think licensure matters here. No malpractice coverage to speak of. I'm amazed the infirmary is stocked.

But it is. What are you looking for?

And...your name is?

A pleasure. I'm Miles Edgeworth; I'm on the security team.

No. It's only in the past month or so that people have gotten so...restless, I should say; there were incidents of violence and clashes before then, but no one had been discussing such actions prior to this. I expect it shall all die down again shortly.
jurisimpudent: (put out)

[This is not a voice that ever intends a pun, Dr. Tam.]

Quite. I've been keeping records since I arrived, but that was no more than three months ago. Prior to that, record-keeping was spotty at best. Why do you ask?
jurisimpudent: (stressed)

[personal profile] jurisimpudent 2012-09-18 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
[Simon seems a reasonably upright fellow, so Edgeworth answers without checking his frustration and disgust.]

Well. To begin with, they have a monthly fight club. You can probably guess what that consists of.
jurisimpudent: (angry)

Fortunately, no. Though God knows that doesn't stop them from doing ample damage to one another. With precisely no regard for the medical supplies we have on board.

I've been on staff for a whole two days now. It's no Caprica General, but ... [Pensive wars with bitter; pensive wins.] it feels good to be working again.

I'm a plastic surgeon, [and the hard line of her mouth just dares you to make a judgement on that], and if you're a trauma surgeon then you'll have some idea why my patients might need anti-psychotics and anti-anxiolytics.

[The kind of trauma that occasions a series of reconstructive surgeries is also going to leave its mark on the patient's psyche. Then there's coping with what you look like, and what people see.]

I might be able to help you. Would you prefer our discussion to be filtered? Encrypted.

[She's caught onto the computer system quickly, no surprise.]

Particularly now, when what peace we've managed has...Well. We'll see, and we'll guard against such an eventuality.

You were a trauma surgeon, you said?

That's right and he's saved my life before. He's a real great doctor.

I don't know why everybody's talkin' about killin'. I've met a lot of real nice folks here so far.

How's River?
jurisimpudent: (i tried)

not as planned

[personal profile] jurisimpudent 2012-09-18 05:28 am (UTC)(link)
I - forgive me, but why was there a situation in which your life was at risk?
talkstoengines: (so when you said...)

[personal profile] talkstoengines 2012-09-18 05:40 am (UTC)(link)
I got shot.

You - how?
jurisimpudent: (irritable)

[personal profile] jurisimpudent 2012-09-18 05:51 am (UTC)(link)
That's good news indeed. We've dire need of more competent, sensible people on the medical staff; your expertise will be welcomed. And it seems that Ms. Kaylee vouches for you quite highly.

I...see. Well, that's - I am glad he was there, then. And I hope that incident did not repeat itself.
