[The feed comes on to show Taylor looking pretty annoyed, a sharp frown pinching her brows even as something a little more weary lingers in her eyes. Her tone, when she starts speaking, still comes out strong, more authoritative than might be remembered from her before. Her first real announcement as Head of Security, she's keeping her shoulders set and her gaze level.]

I was thinking that this was basic fucking common sense, but seeing as some of you seem to need someone to actually say this shit, I'm gonna lay it out for you.

You don't kill each other, you don't assault each other, you don't steal each other's belongings and you don't damage each other's belongings.

[A pause, making sure those sit clearly before she carries on.]

There is a security team here, we're active and we will take action to enforce these basic rules and rights if we see or are informed of them being broken. Each infraction will be dealt with individually, so don't ask me for a blanket 'what will you do if'. SEC's here to keep everyone safe, not to control your lives. Most of you know the kind of shit we've had to deal with here - if you don't, you should've read about it. It's bigger and it's nastier than this kind of sniping, so calm the fuck down and stop fucking with each other already.

[A moment, keeping the same hard expression before she seems to relax slightly, looking away at something off camera and then back again.]

Personal request: if there's anyone that can do tattooing or just art shit, drop me a message. [A slight motion of her shoulders, almost a shrug.] Been doing them myself, but I want these somewhere I can't get at. Can show you how to do it bare-bones, if you don't know.

You're about to have a fucking catfight on an open feed where I'm trying to let people know SEC's here for them. If anyone's got a problem with any member of the team, they need to bring it to me, and you spewing your fucking professional integrity everywhere is gonna make them think they can't do that.

First, the feed isn't open; I encrypted it. And second - well, I don't know, Tyke; perhaps my way of thinking is old-fashioned and stodgy, but I rather would have thought she should have lost her damned right to complain and petition when she tried to kill me. But I suppose that's simply the sort of thing we put up with here on the forward-thinking, modern Tranquility.

You want me to cut people's rights when they go stupid in a stressed situation? She was upset, you put pressure on her, you knew you were doing it, and she snapped. It wasn't the way you wanted her to snap, but it was what happened.

She's got right to say whatever she wants to say to me. You really think I'm gonna drop and roll over just because she says she doesn't like you? 'Cause that's what this is sounding like.

She snapped? Tyke, she tried to murder me. She tried to murder - And not two weeks ago she was threatening to do the same damn thing again, threatening to kill someone else, and that person took the threat as credible enough that she had to call in people to defend her. Where I am from, attempts to murder are a crime. No matter that the person might have been provoked by, well, the terrible hardship of someone trying to find out if someone else was murdered. If you try to kill someone, you shouldn't be mixing with other elements of society. You should be contained.

It took me two words to get her to cut that shit out. You know what that says? She wasn't trying. It's all bark, no bite. You want to chuck everyone who's made threats around here in the brig, then I need to go in there too. You were the one running a survey on how many of us have experienced violence. You think we're gonna start talking pretty at each other because you're around?

This isn't a regular society. This is a hostile situation with too many variable elements to apply any kind of complex expectations on behaviour. You seriously thought she'd committed a crime, you should have told me. So you pick one, Edgeworth. Either you've got a petty issue with her, or you're questioning my professional integrity.

[He clenches his teeth. He's not going to touch that last challenge.]

Did she or did she not order someone or something else to take my life, something which thereafter had to be recalled and which without abortive action would have killed me?

[Wrong choice, Edgeworth.]

[His voice becomes very, very brittle.]

[Taylor just stares at the camera for a moment before rubbing a hand over her forehead, looking completely tired out before she manages to pull it back again.]

I thought that, I would've let her kill you. I thought that, I'd let you run your mouth off at everyone with a quick temper instead of telling you to take a time out.

I need my team respecting my decisions. Backing me. Not pretending and then holding grudges.

[Which is a decent enough answer that he lets his guard down just a little bit more; his voice, when he speaks now, is raw.]

If this were at home - there wouldn't even be a question. People who try to kill other people don't just walk free. It doesn't matter if the target of their attempt deserved to die - [And there, he sounds immeasurably bitter - ] But instead, I sat in my room and anticipated my own death, and even so she's still walking around and threatening other lives - and all the while being treated like a good and loyal person. Tyke, how is that right?

[She looks a lot, for a second, like why the fuck are you asking me? But she'd pretty much asked for it, and it wasn't like the subject didn't hit vaguely close to home. She'd done enough violence in her past, before the ship and on it (tried to kill Tommy, once - hadn't thought it was him, out of her mind on the fear gas, but it still weighed on her).]

You know how many people maybe think about it? Go out and buy a gun or a knife, maybe just grab one. Doesn't matter if they're planning it cold, if they're scared, upset, angry. Someone or something stops them and they never do it again, you gonna say they're a bad person?

I'm not gonna tell you Jaye's a great person. She pisses me off, she keeps making stupid decisions and landing in bad spots. It's gonna get her killed or hurt, but she keeps doing it. [The core of Taylor's issues with the woman right there, and it was possibly telling that it was, down at the bottom of it, a matter of her safety. Anyone's safety. The same reason she kept trying to pull Edgeworth back before his mouth and his arguments got him hurt.] She should've hung up on you, she shouldn't have sent that thing after you. But she didn't hurt you, and you didn't see how much of a mess she was in that room.

[A pause, and she keeps her voice level and light, not accusatory, aware of how badly Edgeworth could take what she had to say next.]

You just think for a moment, if she maybe is a good and loyal person, how she might've felt with someone she liked that much being gone? And you making out like she'd hurt them?

Yes. I did think about that, which is why I didn't call for vengeance then and there. Which is why I just warned certain people who to think of in case I ended up dying. But then she threatened to kill someone else. That says to me that this wasn't something born of grief; that says to me that she was using her so-called grief as a pretense.

[She's going to skip the rest (the grief wasn't a pretense, she'd seen it herself; what exactly the context was on this other threat he kept mentioning) because,]

Vengeance. Are you fucking serious?

You know what I mean. Her imprisonment. Or a sentence of community service. Or a slap on the damn wrist rather than every damn person on this ship nuzzling in against her like she's the warmest and cuddliest murderer they've ever met!

She got a fucking slap on the wrist. You think I went over there, shook her hand and told her she'd done a good job setting that thing on you? She isn't a murderer. She made a mistake.

Then again. Why is she threatening to kill other people?

[It's snapped, and she pauses for a moment, taking a breath.]

Where is this other threat you keep going on about.

[There's a pause of surprise; when he speaks again, his voice is quieter.]

A few days ago, the young woman Heather Mason criticized her for leaving the crew of the Oxygen Garden to care for her cow. There was some idle talk of the cow being slaughtered if it continues to be an inconvenience. She responded by making a rather...bone-chilling threat against Ms. Mason, which Ms. Mason took as credible enough that she had to ask other people to help protect her.

So you're saying someone idly threatened her animal and she threatened them back. You pull Heather up on that shit?

There's a significant difference between saying "If you don't take care of your animal, we'll eat it" and "I'm going to throw you out the airlock."

[A nod, like she's agreeing with that, but her expression looks significantly unimpressed.]

You don't keep Pess under control, I'll shoot her.

[The muscles jump in his jaw. His voice is stiff.]

I hear your concerns, madam, and request that you do not threaten such extremes. Let us please meet to discuss this further; we can come to an agreement.

That's not what your gut says when you hear that. That's just the pretty words you know you should use, 'cause that's the life you've lived. Your gut says you'll do anything to keep that dog safe.

[She says it with certainty, has seen enough of him with Pess, has seen enough of him in general.]

[His jaw works itself down a little further.]

...Maybe so. But I'd never kill you. I'd never even threaten to kill you.

'Cause it's different for you, like I said. Jaye, me, we're from places where threats is all people listen to.
