[ October's camped out in some nondescript hallway, jean-covered legs stretched out, an open book (thanks, Jim) sitting in her lap when she turns the feed on. Settling back against the wall, she twists the ring on her right forefinger a few times before she says anything. ]

I've noticed that a lot of the people here come from places filled with things that shouldn't exist. Either that or they come so far from the future that space travels and interacting with aliens is second nature to them, which made me wonder two things. [ She glances over at her device now. ] One: how many of you come from completely normal places? No werewolves, no zombies, no ghosts; nothing that belongs in a book, not in real life.

And two: has anyone stopped to think that maybe that's why most of us are here? Because we're used to the strange and the unreal so we might be able to deal better? [ It's a theory, one she likes better than wondering how many people on board are dead back home, like her.

She twists her ring around a couple more times before she reaches for the device. ] The possibility of it sits a hell of a lot better with me than "we're chosen at random" but if anybody's got any better ideas, feel free to speak up.

[ And then she cuts the feed. ]

[ Mildly: ] I would note that 'normal' is a relative term.

[ It's a half-pointless argument, admittedly, considering the second part of the transmission, but still, the phrasing doesn't sit well with his palate. ]

We do not have werewolves or anything supernatural. Though the technology is somewhat more advanced, though only a few know about it.

That sounds more than a little big brother-y if you ask me. [ Because "only a few" usually means the government. ] I think I'd prefer ghosts and goblins.

Ain't nothing supernatural about my home world, and it's only 2009 there.

You would rather it. [She confirms.]

This idea of multidemensions or universes is intriguing.

You're three years ahead of me. [ Let's not talk about the other differences. ]

It's also a pain in the ass. [ While October's interested in learning, she's not exactly enjoying the confusion it causes. ] I'm surprised there hasn't been some massive conflict because of people from different worlds disagreeing on something huge.

Yeah? Most people are like way ahead of me.

[ She nods. ] I guess I'm glad I'm the exception to the rule?

How do you mean? Culture clash? [A anthropological study would be interesting.]

Is that something to be glad about? We never got hoverboards.

Yeah. Like we've got all of these people coming from worlds with different laws and everything, but everyone seems to be living together almost peacefully. [ Except for those who died recently, but October doesn't know if those were murders. And, if they were, who can prove that it was another passenger instead of the ship itself? ]

[ That gets a huff of amusement. ] No, we didn't, but we're all trapped on a spaceship now in god knows what year. Getting hoverboards back home seems a little less exciting now.

I think most of us recognize we're trapped on a ship that means to kill us. We've become our own collective. Safety in numbers.

I'd discard the term entirely, or, at the least, quantify what you mean by it. What some think of as the stuff of stories might be considered ... average, to another.

[ A pause, and then: ]

A trifling complaint, I know.

You'd think that would only last for so long, though, considering just how many people we've got on board. [ It's not like there's a small group and everyone knows that larger groups eventually have issues come up. ]

Yeah, it is, but you've got a point. [ It's hard to tell if she's being sarcastic or not... ] I'll make sure I clarify myself next time.

Hoverboards will never not be exciting, yo. I'd take a hoverboard over the spaceship any day.

True. Perhaps no issues have come up. Or issues that we don't know about.

Aside from the various risks that come along with this place and the fact that I'm not here by choice, I think I'd prefer the spaceship. [ If she went with hoverboards and being back home, she'd be six feet under and unable to enjoy them. ]

Which means when one hits, it's going to be ten times worse than it might've been before.

Is there anything to this place other than all the scary shit?

Probably. There's going to be huge damage control when it happens.

[ Okay, he kind of has a point, but she's alive and that's better than nothing? ] There's the holodeck. I'm pretty sure you can use that for non-scary shit.

Just don't do anything with it that requires an incantation to start; you'll regret it.
