[ Well, he's one of the allowances. He's back from the morgue, where he and Neal have laid Sherlock's body for the people who will be more inclined to the analytical. Now he's alone (in more ways than one) and ready to be alone for the foreseeable future once he gets into his flat, his flat, 197. 198 was the domain Sherlock kept separate, a lab and whatever else he needed for work, and 197 was where the two of them lived. John doesn't plan to see 198 any time soon - he imagines it's where Neal will go, and John doesn't want to watch it.

He's not expecting Chase because he's not looking at the network anymore. But when John sees her, standing guard in front of the doors, he pauses. The hat, Jesus Christ. And the coat is Neal's and the communicator is John's. Sherlock had planned it all.

A second later and John's feet move him again, approaching his room. A part of him really hopes that Chase doesn't want to talk, and the other part is chastising such a selfish thought.

In the end, as he reaches her, he nods. He looks tired, if anything. His face shows no evidence of crying, just a put-upon wariness and what seems like five more years on his actual age. Internally, though? He's a mess. It's just one great, ugly mess waiting to explode.

He nods to the girl. ]

[He knows what it's like. The false sympathies, the apologies. Saying "I'm sorry for your loss" just doesn't cut it, and it never does. It doesn't bring back the dead, and it doesn't help seal the open gaps that have been made when someone's gone.

[So, he isn't going to apologize. Either way, she probably already knows.]

You have every right to be upset, Chase.

[There. That's something. Validation, maybe. But it's better than the patronizing murmurs of the people who told him that it was going to be okay, and didn't, couldn't have any idea what he is really going through.]
