[and the video clicks on to James Kirk. he's a little rough around the edges, having just staggered out of jump, been fed on by a wraith, and now handling a possible crisis situation but his tone is sharp, clipped. commanding.]

To everyone joining us, you're on board the starship Tranquility, a space faring vessel in a parallel universe to your own. The year is 938 After Earth. I'm sure you have plenty of questions. I'd like to welcome to you with happy news, but unfortunately that isn't possible. Effective immediately, you are part of the active crew. Whomever was here before us, save Captain Ward and First Officer Resnik- they're long gone.

I want everyone to exercise caution when moving about the ship. I've provided what we have of a MAP attached to this broadcast. This map may not match some corridors you travel down, as we've found during every jump, the internal network of the ship seems to rearrange itself. Move in groups if you're able to and stay alert.

One more thing:

If you encounter anything similar to THIS, let someone know and do not engage. It is a potentially hostile entity on the ship that's been causing us trouble.

Above all, stay calm. Panic won't get us anywhere.

[he takes a breath. he wishes he was finished, but that isn't the case.]

Security, if at all possible I'd like everyone to split as evenly as possible between Alpha and Beta shifts. We need coverage in the main hubs of activity, including medical and engineering. Anyone without a weapon, the Gunnery has access to the ship's weapons, and we will supply you with arms. We also have ten working phasers, if any of you are interested. Historically, in our own universe, we find they work better, are cleaner and more precise than the projectiles that most of you use.

[ He's been keeping an eye on the communication, and not entirely sure it's for the best if he leaves the medical bay wholly unattended. There will be plenty to go help and carry the body, people who sounded a lot closer and a lot more justified for being there... From what it sounded like, time was not of the essence in examining Hotspur. It was possible nothing could be gleaned from the situation as well, aside from a greater mess than what the ship had made of the former shuttle monitor.

Having 'something' doesn't sound like a shot of scotch. Still, if Jim is calling him specifically, he has to do his best to answer whatever it is. ]

I'm already on it. Currently trying to determine exactly where they were pulled from, so that we may look for more trasmissions from the same communicator. Unless we already have that information? I assume the previous captain's network device isn't just sitting around somewhere for us to find.

[ It's an instinctual reply at that name, although she can't help but deny that there was a little confusion at hearing his name. Captain Kirk, here? At least it gave her a little more trust in understanding the situation, hearing it from someone like him

Do you know much at all about the ship, or its original crew?

[ It takes him a few moments to put his thoughts together. This is undoubtedly James T. Kirk. His services to Starfleet are legendary, and even if that weren't the case, as a previous Captain of the Enterprise, Data would have studied him profusely. He recognised his face, his voice - it's tone and cadence - but this was a younger man, perhaps not yet Admiral Kirk. Curiously, he isn't introducing himself as 'Captain', which prompts further investigation.

He adjusts the video so as not to blatantly show his Starfleet badge, at least until he can review circumstances, and addresses Kirk as Sir, if only because - introducing himself as Captain or not - he is still a superior officer. ]

Sir, may I inquire as to the origins of this vessel?

[ She may not be technologically savvy, nor from a time when things like communication was done by anything but birds with notes tied to their feet, but Alayne Stone has been on the Tranquility through five jumps now and there are names that you know to listen for, even if you cannot manage the devices as well. Kirk is one of those names.

Kirk is captain, as far as Alayne can tell. And captains are to know what is happening, don't they? Otherwise they wouldn't be captain at all; otherwise their men would mutiny and find a better captain, one that wouldn't leave them in the dark. This is what Alayne assumes, though she cannot know for certain. Kirk will know what happened, Alayne thinks before she engages the video feed. He will have answers or he will lie and, in lying, look to make me feel better. (Some lies are kind.) ]

Captain Kirk, [ she greets him with a short dip of her chin. ] I mean not to be underfoot when there are greater matters at hand, but— The man who flew. [ Hotspur. ] The one who— [ She lowers her gaze and does not say: died. A pause, then her question: ]

—was it the ship that hurt him?

I'll take as many shifts as you need me to. My stamina's higher than most people -- [ because, you know, werewolf and all ] -- so don't be afraid to pile on the workload.

An accident. Is that a speculative or official observation? Or one designed to minimise panic, perhaps.

[ sulu is currently sitting on the floor of the locker room with his comm pad, half dressed and immersed in lines of coding. but his comm pings when kirk makes a broadcast, so sulu switches over. ]

I'm working on it. Uhura would probably be faster but I thought...

[ October still feels pretty horrendous, thanks to the jump and the feeding and the Hotspur thing, but she figures she may as well offer herself up to do something. Sitting around and waiting for everyone else to do something isn't exactly who she is. ]

You've been brought here through a rift in in the space/time continuum because of a malfunctioning jump drive. Your only ticket home, that we know of, is to tag along for the ride until we can get it fixed.

We've been modifying the ship's weapons into phasers.

[he picks up what- honestly- looks mostly like a handgun, if a bit space-agey. it doesn't look like what Jim carries.]

I know you've got your own weapons but Spock and I have been working on these for a few months now and we both agree that you should carry something with a little more finesse than a 21st century hand gun.

Working on it. I wanted to check out the room once medical's done with it, too.

938 'After' Earth?

[he gets that a lot, so while he always double takes when he's called 'captain' outside of what he introduces, most times he doesn't recognize them. and since his first jump, he's known others to have intel on who he is.

The Tranquility is a colonization vessel that at one time could house over three hundred thousand passengers and the original crew. The previous crew went mysteriously missing before the first wave of passengers, like you and me, arrived. Nobody knows what happened to them.

[his tone says 'supposedly' because he's not so sure, anymore.]

We've recently started combing the archives for more information.

[it takes some work for Jim to wrestle himself out of the inner klaxon of red alert to face this girl with something more than cold command. he watches her struggle with her words a moment, and while he works up what to say, keeps himself carefully detached.

whether it's part of his training, or something intrinsic in Kirk (to shy away from this sort of thing, emotion that isn't his own), is hard to tell. he presents her with the facts he knows, because she seems to have known him and she deserves that much.]

Hotspur was locked in an area of the ship and didn't make it to the grav chamber in time. He was killed when the Tranquility jumped through the wormhole.

Only take on what you think you can handle. The last thing we need is the security team suffering fatigue when we need them most.
