[so guess which department is still notoriously and relentlessly the most understaffed of all of them? that's right, it's physical sciences. and it's time for another probably not all that successful recruiting campaign featuring everyone's ~~not so favorite~~ demolitionist, jasper.]

It's been awhile since I did one of these, and we just got a new batch of people in about a week ago so I thought I'd introduce myself again. My name is Jasper and I run the Physical Sciences department and we're always looking for new recruits.

Physical sciences covers, well, just about anything you can think of that isn't biological or genetic [what's up xenogen] but personally my expertise tends to run more along the lines of chemistry. And then there's Lydia of course who's expertise is, uh. Basically everything.

What that means for you guys though, is that I'm currently offering to teach any new recruits to physical sciences how to make their own fireworks-- and don't worry guys they're small ones and completely safe. [heading that conversation off at the pass right now.]

Speaking of my considerable areas of expertise. [ That's how Lydia likes to open all conversations tbh. ] Fitz and I finished the mapping software. We're going to take it out with the flight crew this jump, and we should be able to take some concrete measurements of the astronomical layout of our current position in space. With any luck, we'll be able to map our trajectory across multiple jumps.

[gonna be honest only half of that meant anything to jasper. and this is the kid that grew up in space. he is failing as a department head, really.]

So we might actually be able to start getting an idea of where we're heading?

A general direction, in the very least. Obviously the landmarks are unlikely to mean much, but some of the passengers are more familiar with space than others. Who knows what one of them might recognize.

[nodding along to that.] With how many different places people on this ship are from, there's a good chance something will be familiar to someone in time.

Precisely my hope. Key word being hope, because there's no concrete data to base the presumption on at all.

I'm assuming there are some precautionary measures in the case that something may go awry?

I guess that depends on what you're referring to. If you're talking about the fireworks they small and burn out very quickly. Burn isn't even a good word for it. It's mostly just flashes of pretty colors.

If you mean for anything else with the department itself, there are plenty of safety precautions in place, including a containment chamber for testing explosives.

I was referring to both, in honesty.

If it's no added trouble for you, I'd like to insist on a representative from Security be present for the fireworks you mentioned. I hope that's all right?

[rolling his eyes so hard right now, oh my god you guys from sec are all such buzzkills.]

If you guys want to learn how to make fireworks too, I'm not going to stop you from showing up. I'm not going to have any of you hovering when I'm working on my own projects though.

[She is so used to that eye roll you do not even know.]

I can assure you that whoever accompanies me will not be hovering. That is as harmful to work as any mistake. And as far as I'm concerned any other projects are fine, since there are precautionary measures in place as you've said. Despite what you may think my intention isn't to get in your way.

Most of the ingredients are kept in the labs anyway. Unless people have their own guns and decided to go rogue and start cannibalizing bullets, but in that case they're honestly more likely to blow their own fingers off than damage anything or one else. [~~raven~~] All the precaution in the world isn't going to save people from themselves, you know.

[There's a thoughtful pause. In part, because she has to recall what terminology she's learned to fully understand what's being said. Although the point is clear enough.]

I'm well aware, but that is also what Security is here for. If precautions fail and it becomes necessary, then at least there can be evacuations or someone who can stop matters from getting worse. I cannot do anything for lost fingers though, you're right about that. But that is what the Medical team is for, isn't it?

The first. But small ones, about the size of your hand. If you want to play around with anything bigger you'll have to join physical sciences so you can play around in the lab.

That's about the size I know. Science isn't really my thing, but I'm pretty familiar with creating stuff like that. Don't know how much help I could be, but we could compare what we know.
