So, what's there to do on this ship, 'sides walkin' around floors and waitin' for things to pop out at me so I can shoot them in the face?

Nearly every department is short handed right now. Given the comment about shooting, am I correct that your skillset is generally combat oriented?

That's what I've been hearing. 'Course, with a ship this size, not surprising that it's lacking a few people to run it smoothly. And you'd be correct in assuming that I'm combat oriented, for the most part.

Gunnery looks after the ship's weapons system. If you're more infantry oriented, Security would be your best option. Both departments are concerned with defense against internal and external threats, though security is more focused on keeping order on board. Such as there is.

Then it sounds like Security. They're perenially short handed with such a large vessel to try to secure. Even encouraging people to move to the lower levels can only accomplish so much.

Can't say I'm surprised to hear they're short of folk to help around here. Especially in something as unglamorous as Security. Although, smart move on them to ask others to move to the closer floors. Less work that way.

With an entire extra floor becoming inhabited every jump, it was quickly becoming unmanageable. They still run skeleton patrols to the other levels, but they're considered a much more dangerous place to stay.

If you haven't already gotten involved in a department it sounds like we could use you in the gunnery. Or maybe security if you don't mind being on your feet a lot.

Good. You could do what I did and join one department and then volunteer part-time in another. I'm technically a member of the gunnery but I take security shifts sometimes too since they're short-handed. Was that the sort of 'thing to do' that you were looking for?

I was a soldier in the Independents Army. Went on to be second-in-command of a small space vessel after wartime.

Would security, then, be a role in which you would feel comfortable?

Depends on what that entails exactly.

Running patrols, for the most part. Responding to emergencies. Defusing potentially violent situations with a minimal use of violence. Fighting off monsters, when that is necessary.

I would suggest taking a job at one of the departments, but it seems as if you've already heard that. There are some hidden gems around here- holodecks, I find particularly interesting. As well as an interesting library.
