( sam appears in general good-cheer, hazel eyes bright and warm while her smile in contrast in wry. she has wanted to avoid addressing anyone, or making herself beholden to anyone who might try to harness her abilities for their own cause, but after the plague?
her opinion has changed just a little. )
Well, that was a harrowing experience, wasn't it? ( oh, the irony of that word. ) Has everyone quite recovered?
I have been thinking. Since it seems that this is not the seaside city in Antiva I'd hoped to retire to, I suppose I should make myself useful around here.
I'm a mage trained in the healing arts, as well as combat. I am also well-versed in herbalism, thievery and other sundry tasks. I am willing to do anything to help except fight. I've been part of a military organization before and found it just not for me, alas.
What would you good people recommend I do?
( her smile fades and she turns serious. )
Also, I have a substance here which I would like to be examined by someone. Either Doctor Milagros or one of her associates are quite welcome to do so.

in other words, right up until the next horrible disaster, you wouldn't be overworked. but you'll always be needed.

( not having the brunt of anything thrust upon her shoulders, that is. actually getting to cooperate and work with others, and dare she think it, depend on them a little. )
Is there any process I need to undergo to sign up?

[Dependable as anything else on the ship, any rate.]

( and learning. the best thing this place can do for her is to let her a) use her magic for good and b) let her learn skills that have nothing at all to do with her magic. )

[Who is she to let something like an official hierarchy stop her?]

( she grins. )
There is something to be said about being a mere worker bee, is there not?

[Mostly because she was used to people deciding to do what she said]
Just do what needs doin'.

( and now she finally can. it's heaven. )

[Witching is plain and simple. No need for flash.]

You can drop it off to me at the medical bay.

( she grins some, but it fades swiftly as she gives a serious nod. )
Thanks. Now, just how many healers do you have in there? I'd rather heal wounds than fight for anyone again.

Well, well. If it isn't the Hero of Ferelden herself. What are the odds?
[ Look. No one said Hawke was the best at introductions. Or manners. ]
video; private
well, she supposes that this must be her, by not even needing a process of elimination. sam keeps her expression affable enough, though she is not at all certain how she feels about this. considering her family had thrown her away for political gain. )
Rather slim, and yet you seem to have the luck of the draw, madam! Though the name is Samara if you don't mind. Or Warden, as many have assumed.
( she isn't the picture of politeness herself at the moment. they cancel one-another out in her opinion. )
video; private
Well, Samara, just so we're even, they call me the Champion of Kirkwall back home. I think it may be a sentence more than an honor, to be honest. [ The Warden-Commander should be able to sympathize. ] Most call me Hawke - my father's family name. My mother was Leandra Amell.
[ There's a pause as she considers what she's about to say next. The first is not something she offers up often. ]
I'm Marian. It's... good to meet you.
video; private
No doubt about it. It's a burden to be borne heavily while having to smile and wave at people who would've happily shot an arrow through your arse in the recent past. ( completely. ) I see. I am told my mother's name is—or was Revka. First-Enchanter Irving never told me whether or not she still lives.
( sam regards her quietly before softening her self-deprecating grin to a neutral, but not unpleasant look. )
A pleasure, Marian.

[ The sorry goes unsaid here, but not because it isn't meant. ]
I grew up in Lothering. My sister, Bethany, is a mage like you. I don't wish she were here, [ that's kind of a lie ] but I wish you could meet her. I know she would love to meet you.
video; private
( she's jesting, because she doesn't know what she'd think or say of her mother. a woman whose face she can't even remember. it's easier this way. and she isn't inept enough to ask this cousin she knows nothing about "by the way, what's it like to have a mother?" )
Lothering! Andraste's knickers, I was there for a spell. Not long after Ostagar. To think... ( she blinks, surprised, and smiles quietly. )
I think I'd have liked to meet her, too. I could have. And you, and your mother. Were any of you in the town proper at the time? We'd have been hard to miss.
video; private
[ For all the hardship and trouble of being part of a family constantly on the run, in fear of Templars, Hawke knows she's exceptionally lucky to have had her mother and father at all, no matter how briefly. ]
My brother and I fought at Ostagar. [ That went so well, as Samara well knows. ] We only made it back home in time to grab my mother and sister and flee before the horde was upon the village. I don't know if Mother or Bethany would have seen you... They probably wouldn't have realized who you were even if they did.
Strange how these things work out. [ She smiles then, amused by the coincidence, even if it didn't work out in their favor. ]
video; private
( she laughs a little, but then dips her head in a nod. ) So it would seem.
( sam stills at that, feeling guilt hit her like a tonne of bricks. no, she might not have known them from andraste, but they are her family. and no, she might not owe them a bloody copper. but it bothers her nevertheless to hear of their troubles. and it is not their fault that she was given to the templars when she was barely out of toddlerhood. )
I would have helped the lot of you reach some form of safety, had I known. All the collective dung conveniently hit the fan at the same time. I wonder at that, still.
Indeed! ( her smile grows, and gains some warmth. ) I'd like to meet and speak further, if you're willing. My dog is sleeping and staying out of my pack for the moment, so now is perfect for me.
video; private
[ Please. Like either of them are going to live long enough to go grey. That seems to run in the family too. ]
I believe that you would have, Samara. [ Her voice is soft, and her brows knit together in a clear display of the emotion that's seized her guts, if not her heart. The offer to meet chases that feeling away, however. ]
You have a dog? I knew there must be a Mabari around! I could just tell. [ Maybe the Fereldans don't smell of wet dog. Maybe that's just the hounds they travel with. ]
video; private
( tellingly, she does not count her former first-enchanter among that singular number. he does what's needed for his apprentices, certainly. but she was never okay with lily being placed on the chopping block for jowan's stupidity. alas.
most older people she's met thus far have been idiots in one fashion or other. she hopes never to live so long as to lose her wits, whether the taint claims her or not. but that she has long enough to meet her family? well. she could drink to that. heartily. her voice softens, as well, as she exposes her serious side for a brief moment. )
Never again. If you need anything, come to me. ( ah, mabari do wonders to lift the spirits of woebegone fereldans, do they not? she laughs, grinning broadly. )
The smell, I take it? It's distinctive, I'll warrant. And should anything of yours go missing, he's likely the culprit. I've named him Griffon, since disappointingly, the wardens were unable to give me one as a trusty steed to ride into battle.
