I guess I should introduce myself. Detective John Kennex. If you've come across a synthetic named Dorian with dark hair and blue eyes, a woman named Anna with dark hair and brown eyes, or a small but authoritative woman named Maldonado, let me know. It's important.

Anyway, I'm new and I could use a tour guide. Any volunteers?

If their face lights up with blue or red lights. Some have joints like a doll, but that's not always obvious. The MXs have kind of robotic voices, but the DRNs and XRNs are more difficult to tell with. The DRNs were made to be more human-like.

Human-like as in pre-programmed to give responses with the appearance of sentience or actual sentience? Or something in the middle with very vague technical specifications. You know, the classic positronic brain.

What? [He doesn't get that reference.] The MXs are more like the appearance of sentience. The DRNs were "made to feel", as Dorian loves to tell me. There's something called the synthetic soul in them. I don't know much about it.

I'd offer to help with the tour, but I'm afraid I'm still settling in myself. Seen more of the terrifyingly endless hallways and mass shared hallucinations than anything that rightly belongs in a welcome programme.
