prometheus. dude who gave fire to humanity and was punished by the gods by being chained to a rock for all eternity and got his kidney pecked out of his by birds every day.

The version I heard said knowledge instead of fire, and someone said that it's also seen as science going too far now.

It was he knowledge of fire. People like to use it as a metaphor, but the fact is fire improved the mortals' lives. If he did anything wrong, and it's not my place to judge, it was stealing the knowledge rather than letting them figure it out at their own pace.
