ataraxion | TWENTY ONE: VIDEO

[The video feeds opens to show Taylor, stripped down to a tank-top, slight sheen of sweat on her skin and dampening her hair from some recent exertion. There's a small frown pinching her brow, but it isn't the usual annoyance that might be expected of her announcements to the network - this one's a little more like nostalgia, something bittersweet, slightly painful.]

Don't know if we've been here long enough to really call anything a tradition, but I'm resurrecting this one. Fight club, Holodeck 3. Participants and spectators welcome.

[She moves the camera to pan out over the space behind her, the holodeck space cleared, mats laid down, benches set to one side for seating. It's an arrangement that might be familiar to anyone that's been on the ship long enough to remember the last time; intent clear to anyone who hasn't.]

No weapons, hand-to-hand only, no abilities unless agreed upon by both fighters. Someone taps out or goes unconscious, fight is over. We don't need more medical situations than we already get.

[She pulls the camera back to herself as she finishes listing the rules.]

If you've got a combat, military or policing background and you're interested in getting on Security, I can take a corner for assessments. Rest of the time I'll be here making sure things don't get too bloody.

[ not that it really matters what she says, he'll still be down there to bother her C: ]

[Cause she knows some people had always had objections to the fight aspect.]

Yeah, I am. You need me somewhere else?

I'll pretend to be surprised.

[She'd wondered, vaguely, if Dean might avoid the whole thing, knowing his past self's involvement. The fact he doesn't even look like he hesitated to respond feels comforting, in a weird way.]

You actually interested in stepping in to break up any fun? Or do you just wanna be getting into it yourself?

No. You need to be there.

[ and things are quiet. or as quiet as they ever were here. ]

I'll come down.

[She looks a little surprised.]

You're gonna fight?

No.

[ immediately, no hesitation or conflict in it. ]

Just watch.

Seriously, does no one remember the first rule of fight club?

[ he's amused and being an asshole, ignore him. ]

Reminds me of Thanksgiving.

[ You know, traditions, a bunch of people in a small space— never mind. ]

Security, you said?

Stepping in, taking a round, I can do either or both.

[ he wouldn't mind getting down to it, but who knows. just watching could be nice too, for the company. ]

Better than sittin' around.

Not everyone's seen it.

[Including herself - she only found out it was a movie last month.]

Seems like a stupid rule, anyway. How're people meant to come fight if no one tells them?

People beating each other up?

[She looks just a little bemused, wonders if maybe she should've skipped past that.]

I did. We deal with passenger safety, protection amongst themselves or against larger threats and events. [There's a pause, but she remembers him at the lockers, his bow, inquiries about armoury.] You interested?

That what you've been doing with yourself? Could've always given you more patrols, you were getting bored.

[Patrols don't help with boredom, she knows.]

You don't have to come. If you don't want to.

I know I don't. It's not obligation.

Alright.

[She's still frowning slightly, uncertain, looking like she might say more. But then she decides to just let it go - didn't have any damn idea what in the first place.]

Guess I'll see you when you get here.

Alright.

[ at which point derek cuts the connection ]

Have you?

[ because that's clearly the most important thing here. ]

Oh yeah, 'cause those hallways are real interesting. But no, if you want, you can dump some more on me. There's only so much sittin' around and worryin' about Sam I can do, I think.

[ something he's finally realized. ]

[She doesn't answer for a moment, not so much reluctance as wondering how answering will shake out.]

No.

Walking around instead isn't gonna change much.

[Because yeah, the hallways don't provide too many distractions. She looks thoughtful for a second, then nods.]

You can help me out with this today.

[ oh, awesome, have a smile. ]

Great. I'll be over there in a bit.

We should go.

[ Natasha looks almost amused, though it doesn't reach her eyes. ]
