I never thought I would say this, but even I can't drink myself into tolerating this place. Other than people being stupid and making stupid choices that might or might not affect us all in the long run, is there any sort of entertainment here other than the booze?

Oh, I know he is. But he's probably not going to try to kill any of the rest of us on sight, unless I am especially unlucky. [ kol comes to mind... ] You're the one in the most immediate danger. Unless you'd prefer I hadn't warned you and just let you bump into him without any idea he was on the ship in the first place?

[ it's not that she doesn't have any beef with elena or her family -- truthfully, elena dislikes katherine just as much as she always has and she can't see anyone else she knows forgiving her either -- it's just that elena is too good for her own good. she can't let someone go into a potentially life-threatening situation without a little warning, not unless they really deserve it. so far, she has no idea that yes, in fact, katherine does deserve it.

there's a long pause, and then elena sighs. ]

If you must know, Damon's missing and Jenna didn't come out of her pod this month. So I'm a bit... frazzled. At the moment.

A lot rides on that probably, but yeah, chances are he will stick to what he knows. Who he knows.

And I do appreciate it, okay? There, I said it.

[ It doesn't get closer to "thanks" than that. Her tone is ...delicate? Considering? Maybe a bit of both next time she speaks. ]

As far as I have seen, it happens sometimes. No reason to think they are gone. Damon is too much of a pain to go silently, and Jenna...where else would she go? They'll be back before you notice.

[ there's a bit of a pause, and when elena next speaks, the smile is evident in her tone. ]

You're welcome, Katherine. I hope you'll keep this in mind in the future.

[ elena doesn't really expect her to, but it would be nice if katherine would return the favor some day. that's not why she did it, though. she did it because it was the right thing to do. ]

Jenna might go back home next jump. [ home where she dies because katherine is a terrible person, but elena is doing her best to ignore that. ] And there are manticores out there. Damon might be getting attacked, he might die and I would have no way of knowing.

[ another pause, and then: ]

Thank you, though. For making the effort.

[ She's just going to grunt, because no response will make any difference on that subject. ]

And you can't do a thing about it, so don't go troubling your pretty head until you hear back from him. This is a bad time to distract yourself with scenarios that might or might not happen.

[ You can almost hear the shrug. ]

I want to make this clear; we're not in Mystic Falls anymore, whatever we were doing back then doesn't matter as much as making it out of here alive does. Like it or not you and your band of merry friends are my best shot to survive, so the least I can do is making myself anything but an undesirable.

It's kind of hard not to think about it, you know. We can't all just worry about ourselves all the time. Some of us have actual feelings for the people we surround ourselves with.

[ that's the first elena has sounded actually condemning this whole conversation, annoyed at katherine's insistence that she not worry about her boyfriend and the woman who may as well be her mother. how is she supposed to not worry about them? they're her family, and they might be hurt, or just plain gone. ]

No, we're not in Mystic Falls. But that doesn't mean we can just ignore everything that happened there. I appreciate that you're trying now, but let's not pretend that you're doing it for any other reason than to weasel your way into our good graces. I warned you because I know what Klaus will do to you if he finds you, but don't mistake that for friendship.

Hey, I worry about Damon. [ She worries he might be a nuisance, of course. ] But you can't tell between the things you can change and the ones you can't. Worrying about the later it's a waste of time and energy for everyone involved.

[ Jenna though, she really doesn't care about. ]

And now that we have that cleared out, I'm going to get royally drunk and pretend Klaus is not on this ship.

You worry about him getting in your way. [ yeah, damon's always going to be a sore spot, katherine. she's seen you ruin him one too many times to ever believe that you actually care about him. ] It's not like I've got much else to waste my time and energy on. Worry about my family seems as good a way to spend the time as any.
