It sounds like a crime of passion. Whether it was murder or manslaughter, it wasn't premeditated, and my guess is the guilt drove him insane.

Women find it hard to leave abusive relationships. The abuser cripples their self worth, makes them feel dependent on their goodwill, grateful for a level of good behavior that should be standard in a relationship. It happens to all sorts of women, doesn't reflect on them in the slightest.

Even the most charming and debonair facade can hide a monster's worth of mental illness. You can't blame yourself for failing to see the man behind the mask.

There are warning signs. Rushing the relationship, attempting to cut off their partner's contact with other people. Most abusers have control issues, they're possessive, overprotective, jealous sometimes to the point of paranoia. They may also have anger management problems, or an addiction causing anger management problems, that they refuse to take responsibility for. A history of abrupt, explosive violence, especially towards animals or children, is probably the most obvious sign. But it's hard to tell what goes on behind closed doors.
